Mariska’s 2025 documentary, My Mom Jayne, added an important qualification: she identified Nelson Sardelli as her biological father. The complete story includes all of those relationships.
Jayne Mansfield was Mariska Hargitay’s mother. Mickey Hargitay was the man publicly recognized as her father and the father figure who helped raise her after Mansfield’s death. A major qualification emerged in 2025: in her documentary My Mom Jayne, Mariska said that entertainer Nelson Sardelli was her biological father. That disclosure changes the biological-family record, but it does not erase Mickey Hargitay’s role in Mariska’s childhood or family life.

Who was Jayne Mansfield?
Jayne Mansfield was born Vera Jane Palmer on April 19, 1933, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Herbert W. Palmer and Vera Palmer and became one of the most recognizable entertainers associated with 1950s Hollywood.
Mansfield is often reduced to the label of a Marilyn Monroe rival or “blonde bombshell.” That shorthand reflects the publicity culture of the period, but it is an incomplete description of her career. She was a working actress and entertainer whose public image combined glamour, comedy, publicity stunts and carefully managed spectacle. Her film work included The Wayward Bus, and she appeared in other productions that made her a lasting figure in American popular culture.
#1 Best Overall
Her fame also obscured the tension between her public persona and private ambitions. The family-centered documentary My Mom Jayne is partly an attempt to look past the sensational image and reconsider Mansfield as a person, mother and complicated individual rather than merely as a Hollywood publicity creation.
Who was Mickey Hargitay?
Mickey Hargitay was a Hungarian-born bodybuilder who won the overall Mr. Universe title in 1955. His physique career helped lead him into acting and brought him public attention beyond bodybuilding. He became especially well known through his marriage to Mansfield and their appearances together.
Mickey’s significance in Mariska Hargitay’s story is not only that he was Mansfield’s husband. He was the adult who occupied the paternal role in Mariska’s upbringing. After Mansfield died, Mickey helped raise the children, and older public accounts—including a 2013 National Press Club description—referred to him simply as Mariska’s father. Those descriptions reflected the family’s public understanding at the time.
The most accurate modern wording is therefore careful rather than absolute: Mickey Hargitay was the man who raised Mariska and functioned as her father; Mariska later identified Nelson Sardelli as her biological father. The available record supports that distinction without requiring speculation about private family decisions or legal arrangements.

Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay’s marriage and children
Mansfield and Hargitay’s relationship joined two different kinds of mid-century celebrity. Mansfield brought Hollywood stardom and a highly visible publicity persona, while Hargitay was celebrated for his bodybuilding achievements and later acting work. Their public image was reinforced by joint appearances and screen work, but the family’s private circumstances were more complicated than promotional photographs suggested.
Mansfield had a daughter, Jayne Marie Mansfield, from an earlier marriage. She and Mickey Hargitay also had children together, including Mariska. The family story later included Mickey’s wife Ellen Hargitay and Mariska’s siblings, several of whom appear in My Mom Jayne.
The broad chronology is clear, but specific claims about divorce dates, custody arrangements or exactly when each child lived in a particular household should not be presented as settled fact without court records or a reliable archival biography. What can be stated with confidence is that Mansfield and Hargitay were no longer together when she died and that Mickey played an important role in the children’s lives afterward.
How did Jayne Mansfield die?
Jayne Mansfield died in a 1967 automobile crash at the age of 34. Mariska was about three years old. Mariska survived, but the accident ended any possibility of forming ordinary adult memories of her mother.

Mariska did not simply lose a famous parent; she lost her mother before she was old enough to know her as an adult. The result was an unusually indirect relationship built from photographs, family stories, public images and the memories of people who had known Mansfield.
The crash has often attracted lurid retellings and persistent myths. They are not necessary to explain its effect on Mariska, and repeating graphic or disputed details distracts from the more important subject: grief, childhood absence and the family’s effort to understand Mansfield beyond the headlines.

Was Mickey Hargitay Mariska Hargitay’s biological father?
According to Mariska Hargitay’s account in My Mom Jayne, Nelson Sardelli was her biological father. Mariska was born during Jayne Mansfield’s marriage to Mickey Hargitay and was raised with Mickey as her father.
This is best understood as a distinction among different kinds of family relationship:
| Relationship | Person | What the current record supports |
|---|---|---|
| Mother | Jayne Mansfield | Mansfield was Mariska’s mother. |
| Biological father | Nelson Sardelli | Mariska identified Sardelli as her biological father in connection with the 2025 documentary. |
| Father who raised her | Mickey Hargitay | Mickey helped raise Mariska and occupied the paternal role throughout her childhood. |
That distinction matters because saying only that “Mickey was not her father” is misleading. It is biologically incomplete and ignores the care, continuity and family identity associated with the man who raised her. Conversely, older descriptions that call Mickey Mariska’s biological father should now be qualified in light of Mariska’s later disclosure.
There is no need to speculate about the timing of Mariska’s conception, the circumstances of Mansfield’s marriage or the private reactions of family members beyond what they have publicly established. The responsible account attributes the biological-paternity disclosure to Mariska and her documentary.
What is My Mom Jayne about?
My Mom Jayne is a 2025 documentary directed by Mariska Hargitay. It is a personal investigation into her mother’s life, public image and early death. Rather than treating Mansfield’s celebrity as the entire story, the film follows Mariska as she revisits family memories, reconnects with siblings and tries to understand the woman behind the bombshell persona.
Rank #4
The documentary is listed as 105 minutes long. Its participants include Jayne Marie Mansfield, Mickey Hargitay Jr., Zoltan Hargitay, Ellen Hargitay and Mansfield’s former press secretary Rusty Strait, alongside Mariska. Their presence broadens the story beyond a single daughter’s recollection while keeping Mariska’s perspective at the center.
The film is also the source of the most important current update about Mariska’s parentage. It should be read as a first-person, family-centered account—not as a neutral academic biography—but it is the clearest modern source for how Mariska herself understands her mother, her childhood and the family relationships surrounding her.
For readers who want to continue with the family’s own perspective, Mariska Hargitay’s documentary about Jayne Mansfield is the most direct companion viewing. Availability can vary by country, date and format; HBO is identified as the U.S. distributor, so viewers should check the current local catalog before assuming that a particular streaming or rental option is available.
Jayne Mansfield’s film and biographical legacy
Mansfield’s screen legacy is worth exploring separately from the story of her death. Readers interested in her movies may want to look for a Jayne Mansfield film collection featuring titles such as The Girl Can’t Help It, The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? Physical-media editions can change, so the format and availability should be verified before purchase.
For historical context, a Jayne Mansfield biography book can provide more space than a family-profile article to examine her childhood, career, publicity machinery and relationships. Eve Golden’s Jayne Mansfield: The Girl Couldn’t Help It is presented as a researched biography, rather than an official family account. That distinction is useful: a biography can supply chronology and industry context, while My Mom Jayne offers Mariska’s personal effort to reconstruct her mother.

Why the story remains more complicated than celebrity genealogy
The headline question—who were Mariska Hargitay’s parents?—has a straightforward starting answer but not a one-word conclusion. Jayne Mansfield was her mother. Nelson Sardelli was later identified by Mariska as her biological father. Mickey Hargitay was the man who raised her and served as her father figure.
Those facts illustrate why biological descent, parenting, public recognition and family memory should not be treated as interchangeable. Mickey’s role was real even though the later account changed the biological-paternity description. Mansfield’s influence was also more than a famous surname: she left Mariska a public legacy while her early death created an absence that Mariska has spent years trying to understand.
Best Value
My Mom Jayne places that reconstruction in Mariska’s own hands. Its subject is not simply a hidden paternity detail or a glamorous actress’s tragic ending. It is the process of turning fragments—family testimony, old images, sibling memories and a mother’s public reputation—into a more human account of who Jayne Mansfield was.
