Trainwreck is a nine-title Netflix documentary anthology about disasters, scandals and viral events that spiraled out of control. In critic Eric Eisenberg’s August 2025 ranking, The Astroworld Tragedy takes the top spot, followed by Poop Cruise and Woodstock ’99. The order is a matter of taste, not a definitive verdict: the entries range from fatal crowd crushes to political scandal and a reality-TV project gone awry.

How the ranking works

This list follows CinemaBlend Assistant Managing Editor Eric Eisenberg’s complete ranking, published August 29, 2025. His assessments weigh the force of the storytelling, the scale and stakes of each event, and how well the documentary gives the subject room to develop. The annotations below summarize his reasoning; they are not independent viewing reviews.

The anthology’s scope is nine titles: Woodstock ’99, released in 2022, and eight installments released in 2025. Netflix’s official overview lists the 2025 entries from June 10 through July 29. The subjects vary widely, so a lower placement can reflect a smaller-scale story or a critic’s preference for a different kind of documentary—not a claim that it has no value.

The nine Trainwreck documentaries, ranked

  1. Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy

Eisenberg’s top pick focuses on the crowd crush at the November 2021 Astroworld festival at Houston’s NRG Park. Netflix reports that about 50,000 people attended and 10 died as the crowd moved toward headliner Travis Scott. Eisenberg singles out the claustrophobic depiction of the crush and the film’s emotional force.

The legal outcomes are distinct: a Houston grand jury found no individual criminally responsible in 2023, while all 10 wrongful-death lawsuits were settled out of court for undisclosed amounts. The civil settlements should not be read as findings of criminal responsibility. Netflix summarizes the event and outcomes in its Trainwreck overview.

  2. Trainwreck: Poop Cruise

The second-place entry revisits the 2013 Carnival Triumph breakdown after an engine-room fire knocked out key ship systems. Netflix says more than 4,000 passengers were stranded for several days amid overflowing toilets and sewage-soaked carpets. Eisenberg’s rationale emphasizes the passengers’ onboard experience, which gives the story its immediate human stakes. See Netflix’s official synopsis.

  3. Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99

The first Trainwreck installment, released in 2022, earns third place for a festival that deteriorated amid heat, poor planning, high concession prices, sanitation problems, violence and deaths. Eisenberg highlights the escalation: the documentary traces how conditions worsened rather than treating the destruction as an isolated finale. Netflix identifies it as the anthology’s first entry; the critic’s ranking discusses the festival’s mounting crises.

  4. Trainwreck: The Real Project X

At number four, this film follows a 2012 birthday-event Facebook page in Haren, the Netherlands. The invitation went viral and drew teenagers into a riot. Eisenberg’s rationale values the transformation from online party planning into a dangerous real-world event. Netflix’s overview describes the Haren story.

  5. Trainwreck: The Cult of American Apparel

Fifth is the story of the clothing brand’s rise and allegations about its workplace culture and founder Dov Charney. Those allegations require careful qualification: Netflix says Charney denied them, had not been found guilty of or liable for crimes, and that lawsuits were settled or arbitrated. Eisenberg’s placement reflects the documentary’s examination of the company and its culture, not a finding that allegations were proven. Netflix provides the qualification in its official overview.

  6. Trainwreck: Balloon Boy

Ranked sixth, this installment revisits the October 15, 2009 incident in Fort Collins, Colorado, when Richard Heene said his young son was inside a homemade balloon that had escaped. The balloon later landed without the child inside. Eisenberg considers it an average entry, centered on the incident and questions about the Heene family’s actions; that framing should not be mistaken for a definitive conclusion about intent. Netflix’s synopsis outlines the event.

  7. Trainwreck: Storm Area 51

Seventh place goes to the two-part account of Matty Roberts’s viral 2019 Facebook event. Netflix says the Air Force, FBI and FAA advised against illegal attempts to access the base. Eisenberg’s criticism is that the two-part treatment stretches a story whose real-world aftermath he found less satisfying. The film’s format and the agencies’ warnings are described in Netflix’s overview.

  8. Trainwreck: Mayor of Mayhem

This installment covers Rob Ford’s unexpected 2010 election as Toronto mayor, followed by scandals and allegations of hard drug use that drew international media attention. Netflix presents drug use as an allegation, not an adjudicated fact. Eisenberg places the film eighth, arguing that its focus and execution underplay the consequences of Ford’s conduct for Toronto’s government and city. The official synopsis is in Netflix’s series overview.

  9. Trainwreck: P.I. Moms

In ninth place, P.I. Moms examines a proposed 2010 reality series about soccer-mom private investigators. Its production unraveled amid allegations of sabotage and criminal activity; those are allegations in Netflix’s synopsis, not findings to treat as established fact. Eisenberg considers the behind-the-scenes production story smaller in scale than the anthology’s disasters and political scandals. Netflix’s overview describes the project.

Where to start if you do not want to watch all nine

If you want the highest-ranked entry in Eisenberg’s list, start with The Astroworld Tragedy. For a different starting-point recommendation, Tom’s Guide writer Rory Mellon named Woodstock ’99, The Astroworld Tragedy and Poop Cruise as his three picks. That is a short list, not an all-nine ranking or evidence of a broader consensus. His viewing guide calls Woodstock ’99 a three-episode miniseries; Netflix describes Storm Area 51 as a two-part installment.

What kind of story are you in the mood for?

Choose For a story about Titles
A public disaster Festival violence, a fatal crowd crush or a cruise-ship breakdown The Astroworld Tragedy, Poop Cruise, Woodstock ’99
A viral event Online attention spilling into real-world consequences The Real Project X, Storm Area 51
Scandal or allegations Political controversy or workplace-culture accusations Mayor of Mayhem, The Cult of American Apparel
A media or production story A balloon incident or a reality-TV project that unraveled Balloon Boy, P.I. Moms

The list mixes subjects with very different stakes, formats and levels of tragedy. Eisenberg’s order favors the entries he found most compelling; viewers drawn to a particular event or type of story may reasonably choose a different starting point.
