Ranked by characterization, chemistry among the four leads, story coherence, visual execution and how well each film delivers on its chosen tone, the Fantastic Four movies in order are: The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four (2015), and the unreleased 1994 production. That last film is not a standard theatrical release—and the available history establishes that it was never officially released, not that Marvel suppressed it.
How this ranking works
This is an editorial ranking, not an objective verdict. It gives the greatest weight to the team dynamic: whether the four characters feel like a family as well as a group of superheroes. Story coherence, visual execution and consistency of tone also matter. The 1994 production is included because it is part of the franchise’s film history, but its unreleased status makes it different from the four films audiences could see through an ordinary commercial release.

All 5 Fantastic Four movies ranked
1. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
The Fantastic Four: First Steps takes the top spot for making the team’s arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe part of its identity. Marvel lists the film’s opening date as July 25, 2025, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige described it as the team’s official induction into the MCU. He said, “To be able to bring them into the MCU, when that became possible with the Fox acquisition that Disney made, it felt incredible.” Marvel’s film page and Feige’s interview establish that positioning and date.
That connection gives the film a clear place in Marvel’s larger screen universe while keeping the Fantastic Four themselves at the center of the story. It ranks first here because its purpose is not simply to revisit the origin: it introduces the team as a new part of the MCU.
#1 Best Overall
- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
2. Fantastic Four (2005)
The 2005 film ranks second because it understands that the appeal of the Fantastic Four depends on the relationships among Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm—not just their powers. Its accessible superhero-adventure tone gives the four room to function as a mismatched group learning to live with what has happened to them.
It is a less ambitious film than the later MCU entry, but its straightforward approach suits a story about the team becoming a team. That emphasis on chemistry places it ahead of its sequel.
Rank #2
3. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
The sequel expands the scale of the 2005 film with the Silver Surfer and a threat that puts the planet in danger. The larger spectacle gives the story a stronger comic-book scale, but that expansion does not make the team’s relationships more compelling than they were in the first film.
It lands in the middle of this ranking: an entertaining continuation for viewers who want a bigger adventure, though not as cohesive a showcase for the four leads as the 2005 film.

The 2015 reboot takes a darker, more serious approach to the team’s origin. That tonal choice gives it a distinct identity, but the result is less satisfying as a story about four people learning how to work together. The film’s dramatic ambition does not consistently translate into a convincing group dynamic.
It ranks below the earlier released films because the Fantastic Four’s shared chemistry matters more to this list than a more severe atmosphere or a reworked origin.
Rank #4
5. The unreleased Fantastic Four (1994)
Roger Corman’s 1994 production belongs in a history of Fantastic Four screen adaptations, but it was never officially released. The Associated Press retrospective describes it as a film that was never ultimately released; it should therefore be understood as an unreleased production, not another ordinary theatrical entry. The AP’s film-history retrospective covers its place in the franchise’s chronology.
That status also limits what a ranking can fairly say. Unlike the four released films, the 1994 production was not presented to audiences through a standard commercial release, so it is difficult to judge on the same terms of public reception or accessibility. Its final position reflects that distinction, not a claim that Marvel personally blocked it or that the film was hidden for a documented reason.

For the clearest introduction among the earlier films, start with Fantastic Four (2005), then watch Rise of the Silver Surfer. Choose First Steps if you want the team’s MCU arrival; it opened July 25, 2025. The 2015 reboot offers a darker reinterpretation, while the 1994 production should be approached as an unreleased piece of film history rather than a normal entry in a watch order.
