Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the strongest all-around Captain America film: it turns Steve Rogers’ story into a taut political thriller without losing the character at its center. Civil War comes close, but its Avengers-sized ensemble makes it less focused; The First Avenger is a charming wartime origin story, while Brave New World makes an uneven start for Sam Wilson in the title role. This ranking weighs character, story coherence, genre, thematic ambition, and how well each film works as a Captain America story—not just review scores.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
The strongest blend of character, suspense, and a clear central conflict, The Winter Soldier follows Steve Rogers as a mission pulls him into a conspiracy that challenges his trust in the institutions he serves. Its political-thriller shape gives the story a distinctive identity among the four films: tension and uncertainty matter as much as superhero spectacle.
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls it “Suspenseful and politically astute.” Its current snapshot lists a 90% Tomatometer and 92% Popcornmeter. Those figures indicate shares of favorable critic reviews and audience ratings, respectively—not a score out of 100 for the film’s quality. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Civil War puts accountability at the center: after collateral damage, the Avengers split over whether superheroes should accept government oversight. The disagreement gives the film a serious thematic question, and the conflict lands through the relationships among the characters as much as through its action.

SaleCaptain America: Brave New World / Captain America: Civil War / Captain America: The Winter Soldier / Captain America: The First Avenger- Steve Rogers wields the shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
Its main trade-off is scale. This is an ensemble event featuring Captain America, not a tightly focused Steve Rogers thriller like The Winter Soldier. That breadth can make it the more satisfying pick if you value character interplay and the consequences of a team breaking apart; it can also leave the central hero sharing the frame. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as action packed and willing to explore themes, with a 90% Tomatometer and 89% Popcornmeter in its current snapshot. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
The series’ starting point is a World War II origin story: Steve Rogers transforms from an unlikely recruit into a hero fighting HYDRA. Its appeal is deliberately old-fashioned, with a pulpy adventure tone rather than the conspiracy-thriller focus of The Winter Soldier or the ensemble scale of Civil War. That makes it an inviting choice for viewers who want the character’s beginning, even if its story and action are less complex than those of the top two.
Rotten Tomatoes calls it “solidly old-fashioned blockbuster entertainment” and lists an 80% Tomatometer and 75% Popcornmeter. Metacritic offers a separate cross-check: a 66 Metascore based on 43 critic reviews. Both are aggregate snapshots, not a lasting or unanimous verdict. Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson takes up the Captain America mantle in the fourth title film. The change gives the series a new lead, but the story does not feel as self-contained or sharply shaped as the earlier entries. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says Mackie capably takes up the role while calling the film too routine and overstuffed to feel like a worthy standalone adventure.

The gap is worth noting, but neither percentage tells you that all critics or all audience members agree. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page.
How the ranking differs from release order
The four films were released in this order: The First Avenger (July 22, 2011), The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014), Civil War (May 6, 2016), and Brave New World (February 14, 2025), according to Rotten Tomatoes’ guide. That sequence is also the clearest viewing order for following the change from Steve Rogers to Sam Wilson and the relationships built along the way. It is not the same as the MCU’s chronological order: The First Avenger is set during World War II. Rotten Tomatoes’ Captain America guide.

Is Civil War really a Captain America movie?
Yes. It is one of the four theatrical films released under the Captain America title, and Steve Rogers’ conflict over responsibility and oversight drives the story. But it is also an Avengers ensemble film, with a wider cast and broader consequences than the other Captain America entries. Calling it both is more accurate than treating it as either a solo Steve Rogers story or simply another Avengers movie.
Do you need to watch other Marvel films before Brave New World?
The available evidence does not establish a definitive prerequisite list. Watching the four Captain America title films in release order is the most straightforward way to follow the mantle’s transition and the evolving relationships. Brave New World introduces Sam Wilson as Captain America, but its Rotten Tomatoes consensus criticizes how well it works as a standalone adventure; that is a reason to set expectations, not proof that a particular list of other MCU films is required.
