Billy Bob Thornton’s five television credits range from an early sitcom supporting role to the lead of modern dramas and his memorable turn as Lorne Malvo in Fargo. This ranking weighs each show’s legacy, how much Thornton’s performance contributes to it, and the quality and distinctiveness of that performance. The order is an editorial judgment, not a consensus ranking.
5. The Outsiders
In Fox’s early-1990s adaptation of S. E. Hinton’s story, Thornton plays Buck Merrill, a Vietnam veteran and local rodeo star who runs a bar and service station. The series follows troubled teenagers in 1960s Oklahoma. It lasted one season, with 13 episodes, and Thornton’s part is supporting rather than central.
That limited run and smaller role put it at the bottom of this list. It is nevertheless a notable early television credit from before Thornton’s film breakthrough.
4. Hearts Afire
This CBS sitcom stars John Ritter and Markie Post. Thornton appears as Billy Bob Davis, a longtime friend and ally of Ritter’s character, John Hartman. The show ran for three seasons from 1992 to 1995, with 54 episodes listed.

Its place here reflects the supporting nature of Thornton’s role and the fact that this sitcom credit is less distinctive than the lead performances that would follow. It also shows a different early-career register from his later dramatic work.
3. Goliath
Thornton leads this four-season legal drama as Billy McBride, a once-brilliant lawyer whose career and life have declined. A case offers him a possible path to redemption. The series has 32 episodes listed, and McBride gives Thornton a sustained central role rather than a brief supporting appearance.

2. Landman
In this modern story of fortune-seeking around West Texas oil rigs, Thornton plays Tommy Norris, a petroleum landman caught between family pressures and the demands of the business. The series gives him a lead role and makes his performance a central part of its appeal. The ranking source lists 20 episodes.

Landman places second for the force of Thornton’s performance and the way the character’s family and work conflicts drive the drama. Paramount Press Express described the series as streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in its December 18, 2024 announcement; that statement is historical, so check the service’s current catalog in your region.
Paramount reported 14.9 million global households through the series’ first four weeks, measured November 17–December 14, 2024, based on Paramount+ internal metrics. This is a platform-reported historical figure, not an independently verified or current audience count.

1. Fargo (season one)
This ranking is specifically about Thornton’s role in the first season of the anthology, not the show as a whole. He plays Lorne Malvo, a hitman whose arrival draws insurance salesman Lester Nygaard into a violent chain of events. The season has 10 episodes listed.
Thornton’s performance makes Malvo both menacing and strangely funny, giving the season a distinctive center as its violence and emotional stakes escalate. Its combination of dark comedy and tension, alongside the lasting impact of Thornton’s Golden Globe-winning performance, makes season one the strongest of his five television credits here.

How the ranking was judged
The order considers three things: each show’s legacy, how central Thornton is to what makes it work, and the quality and distinctiveness of his performance. By that measure, the list moves from two early supporting credits to multi-season lead roles, then to the concentrated impact of Fargo season one.
The ranking and episode counts follow Zach Laws’s April 21, 2026 Looper article, “All 5 Billy Bob Thornton TV Shows, Ranked From Worst To Best”. Paramount’s dated series description and audience figure are in its December 18, 2024 Landman announcement.
