But in Nicholas Sutrich’s February 13, 2025 review for Android Central, low-resolution visuals and stuttering performance repeatedly broke that immersion. Survios later released two Quest 3/3S updates addressing performance and visual issues, but their notes do not tell us how much those changes improved the game in practice. So the central question remains whether its excellent VR interactions outweigh a technical weakness that has not been independently retested here.
What is Alien: Rogue Incursion on Quest 3?
Alien: Rogue Incursion is a single-player action, shooter, and survival game built for VR. The Meta Store lists it as compatible with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S and describes it as the first part of a two-act story. Players take the role of Zula Hendricks on a dangerous mission to Purdan. The game combines combat with exploration, puzzle-solving, and searching for key cards.
This review concerns the standalone Quest 3 version, not the PC VR release or the later non-VR edition. Android Central reviewer Nicholas Sutrich assessed the Quest build in February 2025; the evaluation below attributes his impressions to that review rather than presenting them as a current hands-on test. Read the Android Central review.
Why the gameplay works so well in VR
Equipment feels physically present
The game makes routine actions part of the experience. You reach to body-mounted positions for weapons and ammunition, consult a motion tracker, handle a PDA, and interact with terminals. Sutrich singled out the on-body inventory as one of the best he had used in a VR game. That is a reviewer’s comparative judgment, not the result of a standardized usability test, but it captures the design’s central strength: managing equipment feels embodied instead of reduced to a menu.

Tools and exploration break up combat
Combat is only one part of the rhythm. Rewiring electrical panels and handling tools such as a welding tool and wrench give the player practical tasks to perform while exploring. Puzzles and key-card searches create reasons to inspect spaces rather than simply move from one fight to the next. Sutrich praised the combination of shooting, puzzles, and exploration, while noting that puzzle variety was limited.
The Alien atmosphere benefits from physical presence
The motion tracker, close-up equipment handling, and vulnerability of fighting in VR support the series’ horror atmosphere. Sutrich also listed the story and voice acting among the game’s strengths, alongside its VR-specific mechanics and enemy balance. The resulting appeal is not just a shooter played through a headset: the equipment and movement help make the danger feel immediate.

The major drawback: image quality and stutters
Sutrich’s main criticism was technical. He described the Quest version’s resolution as very low and reported stutters that disrupted immersion, a particularly damaging flaw in a horror game that depends on tension and atmosphere. The review also said the Quest version used lower-quality assets than the PC and PSVR 2 versions and altered lighting for the headset. Those are observations from the 2025 review, not a claim that the same differences or performance issues remain unchanged today.
The review did not provide a controlled frame-rate or resolution benchmark. Its descriptions of blur and stutter are firsthand reviewer observations, not measurements that can be translated into a precise performance comparison. For a game whose interaction design relies on immersion, however, the practical consequence is clear: visual softness and interruptions can undermine the very presence its mechanics work hard to create.

Did later Quest updates fix the problem?
Survios published two Quest 3/3S patch notes after the review that are relevant to its complaints. The notes document changes made by the developer, but do not quantify the improvement or establish how the current build performs for players.
| Update | What Survios listed | What the notes establish |
|---|---|---|
| Patch 1.01, February 27, 2025 | Reduced chance of performance drops during combat, stability improvements, visual fixes, fog adjustments, and gameplay changes. | The developer reported changes aimed at performance, stability, visuals, and gameplay; the notes do not measure the resulting improvement. Survios Patch 1.01 notes. |
| Patch 1.02, April 24, 2025 | Additional performance optimizations, VFX work, dynamic alarm lighting, and visual and gameplay fixes. | The developer documented further changes, but did not provide a current independent benchmark or quantify their effect. Survios Patch 1.02 notes. |
These updates mean the February 2025 review should not be treated as a test of the current build. They also do not prove that the original complaints have been fully resolved: patch notes are not an independent retest, and no current Quest performance measurement is established here.

How the versions differ as buying choices
There are several ways to experience the game, but the available evidence does not establish a controlled, current head-to-head comparison. Choose based on whether you value standalone convenience, PC VR or another platform’s setup, or a non-VR presentation.
- Standalone Quest 3 or Quest 3S: The Meta Store lists both headsets as compatible. This is the version Sutrich reviewed, and the one for which Survios documented the two Quest updates above. See the Meta Store listing.
- PC VR: Steam lists support for Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, Index, and Rift S. Its system requirements apply to the Steam PC build; they do not predict standalone Quest performance. The review describes lower-quality assets in the Quest version than in PC and PSVR 2 versions, but that observation should not be treated as a current, measured comparison. See the Steam listing and PC requirements.
- Non-VR Evolved Edition: Tom’s Guide reported its launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox on September 30, 2025. It is a distinct flat-screen edition, not a later visual mode for the Quest release. In an interview, Survios game director Eugene Elkin noted the rendering demands of VR: “In VR, you have to render twice, once for every eye.” Creative director and chief product officer T.Q. Jefferson described the adaptation trade-off this way: “There are areas of authenticity that VR particularly lends itself to, but there are always trade-offs.” These comments explain why adapting the experience involves different priorities; they do not independently establish the visual quality of any particular build. Read Tom’s Guide’s interview about the Evolved Edition.
Is the Quest 3 version worth playing?
It is most compelling for players who want tactile VR interactions and an Alien-themed survival experience, and who can tolerate the possibility that visual softness or stuttering may weaken the atmosphere. The strongest case is the way inventory, weapons, tools, and exploration are built around physical interaction. The strongest reservation remains the technical criticism in the 2025 Quest review, tempered—but not conclusively settled—by two later developer updates.
Best Value

If performance quality is the deciding factor, the available evidence is not enough to promise that the current Quest build has fixed the issue. PC VR, PSVR 2, and the separate Evolved Edition are alternatives to consider, but none should be assumed to deliver an identical experience based on the information here.
