It has to reopen a story that seemed complete, and its original Joker-card framework gives the return a reason to exist: the danger is familiar, but the players and challenges are new. The season premiered worldwide on Netflix on September 25, 2025.
What Season 3 is about
After returning to the real world, Arisu and Usagi are married, but memories of Borderland continue to surface. When Usagi is abducted by Ryuji, a scholar obsessed with the afterlife, Arisu goes back to Borderland to save her. The Joker card sets the stage for a fresh round of games and brings new players into the story.

That setup gives the season a clear emotional anchor. Arisu is not simply trying to survive another arbitrary gauntlet; his return is tied to Usagi and to the life they have built. Their relationship carries forward the central bond of the earlier seasons while giving the new journey an immediate personal stake.
Do the new games justify another season?
The games are the most direct reason to return. The Joker framework offers a new sequence of challenges rather than merely replaying the previous seasons’ setup. The appeal remains the show’s familiar mix of problem-solving, cooperation and mistrust: players must read situations quickly, judge whom to trust and keep moving when a mistake can be fatal.

The new round also creates room for a wider ensemble. Players such as Tetsu, Sachiko, Kazuya, Rei, Nobu, Shion and Natsu bring new personalities into a world viewers already understand. That balance—recognizable rules, unfamiliar people—is useful to a series built around games, because the tension depends not just on the puzzle but on how different people respond under pressure.
Season 3 is an original story within a franchise based on Haro Aso’s manga; it should not be mistaken for an adaptation of a specific manga arc. For returning viewers, that means the season can continue the characters’ story without asking the source material to supply a direct blueprint.
How it compares with the earlier seasons
The first two seasons made Borderland’s survival contests and Arisu’s personal journey inseparable. Season 3’s strongest case for continuing is that it preserves both elements: the new games provide the immediate suspense, while Arisu’s rescue mission gives the danger a personal purpose. The premise is familiar, but the changed circumstances and cast keep the season from being only a repeat of the earlier rounds.
The trade-off is that returning to a world the story had already left behind inevitably risks feeling like an extension rather than a necessary next chapter. The Joker card and Usagi’s abduction offer a practical way into the new story, but viewers who wanted the earlier ending to remain final may find the continuation less compelling. The season works best when its games and its central relationship pull in the same direction.

Performances and new characters
Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya return as Arisu and Usagi, keeping the emotional continuity in familiar hands. Kento Kaku joins the cast as Ryuji, whose afterlife obsession helps set the plot in motion. The broader new ensemble includes Koji Ohkura, Risa Sudou, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Tina Tamashiro, Kotaro Daigo, Hyunri and Sakura Kiryu.
Tsuchiya described the challenge of carrying the past into the new story: “With Season 3 featuring an original story, I felt it was important to approach this role with everything that’s happened so far in mind.” That is a statement about her approach to the role, not an independent assessment of the season, but it captures what the continuation asks of Usagi: she is part of a relationship and history that the new adventure cannot simply reset.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 63% Tomatometer from 8 critic reviews and a 55% Popcornmeter from 500+ audience ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a settled consensus; scores and counts can change, and eight critic reviews is a limited sample. Visible critic reactions ranged from praise for suspense, chemistry and performances to criticism of the straightforward approach, pacing and unanswered questions. The split is consistent with the season’s central gamble: it brings back a well-liked premise, but not every viewer will want that world reopened.
Is Alice in Borderland Season 3 worth watching?
Yes, particularly for viewers who want more of the series’ deadly puzzle games and are invested in Arisu and Usagi. The new Joker round supplies a fresh structure, while the rescue story prevents the return from being only a collection of challenges. It is less essential for anyone who prefers the earlier conclusion to stand on its own. Season 3 makes a credible case for another visit to Borderland, even if the decision to continue the story will not persuade every returning viewer.
Alice in Borderland is a Japanese, TV-MA series based on Haro Aso’s manga. Netflix describes Season 3 as an original story.
