In A Discovery of Witches, daemons are a distinct people in the hidden supernatural world shared with witches and vampires. The clearest explanation of their defining trait comes from author Deborah Harkness: “A demon’s superpower is creativity.” That is a guiding idea for daemon identity—not a complete list of uniform magical powers. The television series establishes their place in society and introduces several daemon characters, but its official summaries do not provide a comprehensive power catalogue.

What are daemons in A Discovery of Witches?

Daemons are one of the three supernatural groups in the series, alongside witches and vampires. Harkness has explained that her spelling, “daemon,” points back to Greek and Roman ideas of a guiding spirit, rather than the later Christian image of a fallen or dangerous devil. She described them as spirits that help people make decisions and try to lead them toward the right path in an interview with the Folger Shakespeare Library.

That background helps explain why creativity is the most useful shorthand for what makes daemons distinctive. It is Harkness’s description of her fictional concept, not evidence that every daemon has an identical supernatural skill set. The series’ daemons are characters with individual roles and traits; they are not simply another name for witches or vampires, nor should they be confused with animal familiars or dæmons from other fantasy settings.

What powers do daemons have?

The strongest creator-backed characterization is Harkness’s concise line: “A demon’s superpower is creativity.” She also said these guiding spirits could help people make choices and steer them toward a better path. In the interview, she separately clarified her intended spelling as “daemon.” Read together, those comments suggest a creative, guiding nature rather than a standardized catalogue of spells.

The television material does not establish a shared list of powers such as clairvoyance, precognition, or spellcasting for all daemons. Their political actions, relationships, and unusual personal qualities are shown more clearly than a uniform magical system. It is therefore safer to distinguish Harkness’s broad creative framing from abilities that the show explicitly depicts for a particular character.

Who are the named daemons in the series?

  • Agatha Wilson: A daemon and a member of the Congregation, the council that governs the supernatural community. AMC’s Season 1 recap identifies her as a daemon representative.
  • Hamish Osborne: Matthew’s close daemon friend and confidant, as described in AMC’s recap.
  • Nathaniel Wilson: Agatha’s son. Apple TV’s series page and episode summaries describe him as instigating daemon direct action—a political choice, not a stated magical power.
  • Sophie Wilson: Reveals that she is “a daemon born of witches.” AMC and Apple TV present this as evidence that cross-species offspring are possible in her case; it does not establish a universal rule for every daemon.

Netflix Tudum’s series guide also groups Agatha, Hamish, Nathaniel, and Sophie among the show’s daemons.

Discovery of Witches, A: Season 3
  • In the final season of A Discovery of Witches, Matthew and Diana return from their trip to 1590 to find tragedy has occurred at Sept-Tours. They must locate the missing pages from the Book of Life—and the Book itself—before it’s too late. But their enemies are gearing up against them, and a monster from Matthew’s past has been lying in wait to return for revenge.

What role do daemons play in the Congregation?

The Congregation is a nine-member council with three seats each for witches, vampires, and daemons, according to AMC’s Season 1 recap. Agatha’s membership is the clearest on-screen example of daemon representation in the supernatural world’s governing structure. Nathaniel’s call for daemon direct action shows political agency, but should not be mistaken for a supernatural ability.

How does the television series differ from the books?

The show adapts Deborah Harkness’s All Souls trilogy, beginning with A Discovery of Witches, which Penguin Random House identifies as the first book. Details established in the novels should not automatically be treated as events or rules the television adaptation explicitly depicts.

Executive producers Jane Tranter and Lachlan MacKinnon have discussed how the series changes the way information is delivered: Diana’s point of view in the novel includes material that television must show through scenes and other characters. Their AMC Talk interview is useful context for why book explanations and what the TV audience sees may differ.

Quick Recap

What is clear—and what remains unspecified?

  • Established: Daemons are a distinct people in the show’s supernatural society, with three Congregation seats.
  • Established: Agatha, Hamish, Nathaniel, and Sophie are identified as daemons in official series material.
  • Creator framing: Harkness connects the term to guiding-spirit traditions and emphasizes creativity.
  • Not established as a group-wide rule: A complete, shared list of daemon powers. The official TV sources discussed here do not confirm that all daemons can see the future, cast spells, or use other specific abilities.
