Alec Baldwin’s Western Rust opened in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025. The Associated Press reported an estimated $25,000 from 115 theaters for its May 2–4 opening weekend; the distributor did not report box-office figures. That limited opening is the film’s box-office headline, but it does not establish its eventual total or explain why attendance was low.

The figure should be treated as an estimate, not a distributor-confirmed result. The Associated Press reported that distributor Falling Forward Films did not report box office; estimates put the weekend at approximately $25,000 from 115 theaters. The AP report therefore makes clear why the number is not a reported final result.
What the opening-weekend figure does—and does not—show
This is an opening-weekend tally for a limited U.S. theatrical release. It is not a complete domestic or worldwide gross, and the available figures do not establish whether the film was profitable. Nor does the tally identify why audiences did or did not attend. The number alone cannot demonstrate that the film’s production history, reviews, release strategy, or any other single factor caused the result.

What critics said about Rust
Critical response was not uniformly established by the box-office figure. In a May 2, 2025 review, RogerEbert.com criticized Baldwin’s casting and the film’s tonal consistency. That review is one contemporary critical response, not a substitute for every critic’s view or a measure of audience reaction. Read the RogerEbert.com review.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The film’s production history
Rust was directed by Joel Souza and stars Alec Baldwin. Its release followed the 2021 on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured Souza. The Associated Press review situates the film in that context. The AP review discusses the film and the tragedy surrounding its production; that history is important context, but it does not establish the cause of the opening-weekend estimate.
