Dudesy’s AI-generated comedy special George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead prompted a public objection from George Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, in January 2024. The dispute later ended in a settlement requiring the video’s permanent removal and barring Dudesy from using Carlin’s image, voice, or likeness without the estate’s express written approval.
What was the AI-generated George Carlin special?
On January 9, 2024, the comedy podcast Dudesy posted George Carlin: I’m Glad I’m Dead to YouTube, presenting it as an AI-created imitation of the late comedian. The special used a voice and performance resembling Carlin’s to deliver new material. It was not a recording of Carlin performing the routine.
Kelly Carlin, George Carlin’s daughter, objected publicly to the use of her father’s persona. As reported by The Guardian, she said: “My dad spent a lifetime perfecting his craft from his very human life, brain and imagination. No machine will ever replace his genius.” Her objection centered on the human experience and creative work behind his comedy, not simply the resemblance of the imitation.
What happened after the family objected?
On January 25, 2024, the George Carlin estate sued Dudesy’s creators. The estate’s complaint alleged copyright infringement and violations of publicity rights—claims about unauthorized use of Carlin’s identity. Those were allegations in a lawsuit, not findings by a court that the defendants had violated the law. NPR’s report on the complaint describes the dispute and the claims made by the estate.

The parties settled in April 2024. According to the Associated Press settlement report, the agreement required the special to be permanently removed and Dudesy to refrain from using Carlin’s image, voice, or likeness again without express written approval from the estate. Kelly Carlin said she was “pleased that this matter was resolved quickly and amicably,” and grateful the defendants had swiftly removed the video.
What the settlement did—and did not—decide
The agreement resolved the dispute between the estate and Dudesy on the reported terms. It was not a court ruling on the complaint’s merits, nor a general decision establishing how copyright or posthumous publicity rights apply to all AI-generated performances. The reported restrictions concern Dudesy’s use of Carlin’s likeness and do not, by themselves, settle the broader legal questions raised by generative AI.

Why Carlin’s likeness remains part of the AI debate
The 2024 settlement addressed one video and one set of parties. In October 2025, Axios reported renewed family objections to AI videos depicting Carlin and other deceased public figures on Sora, a separate development from the Dudesy case. The report reflects continuing concern about recreating public figures after death; it does not change the terms of the earlier settlement. Axios’s October 2025 report covers those objections.
