Agatha All Along gives Kathryn Hahn the lead role her scene-stealing witch seemed to demand: a sharp, funny, occasionally vulnerable guide through a coven’s strange and dangerous trials. The series is most satisfying when it lets its mismatched witches become a real ensemble; its theatrical songs and tonal shifts are more divisive, and it does not consistently recapture the surprise of WandaVision.
What is Agatha All Along about?
Released by Marvel Television on September 18, 2024, the series picks up with Agatha Harkness after the events of WandaVision. Once freed from a spell, she is powerless—and keenly aware of it. A mysterious teenager asks her to lead him to the Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that promises its survivors what they most desire. Agatha’s way forward is to assemble a coven, though cooperation is not exactly her strongest talent. Marvel’s official series page lists the premise and cast.
Creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer described the central setup as “a story of a coven-less witch who is forced to form a coven.” That is also the show’s most useful point of distinction from its predecessor: instead of building around Wanda’s shifting realities, it turns a self-interested witch’s reluctant alliance into a fantasy road story. Disney’s production feature published that description on September 17, 2024.
Does Kathryn Hahn carry the series?
Yes. Hahn makes Agatha’s appetite for power, tactical charm, and flashes of self-protection entertaining without softening her into a conventional hero. The role works because the show does not ask her to behave: Agatha can be a ringleader, a menace, or the person most likely to puncture a solemn moment with a cutting remark. Hahn supplies the momentum even when the plot pauses to explain its magical rules.

That central performance is both the spinoff’s strength and a limitation. Agatha has the most vivid presence, so the supporting witches can initially feel like pieces arranged around her. The series becomes richer when they are allowed their own motives and vulnerabilities, rather than serving only as foils for Agatha’s schemes.
Does the coven and Witches’ Road make a satisfying story?
The Road gives the series a natural episodic engine: each trial can change the setting, test the coven in a different way, and expose something the witches would rather conceal. That variety suits a show whose pleasures come from seeing clashing personalities forced into close quarters. The trials also give the ensemble more to do than simply follow Agatha from one witty exchange to the next.

The structure is less effective when its mysteries and magical mechanics take precedence over the group’s emotional development. A trial can be visually and tonally distinct without making every character’s revelation feel equally earned. The show’s best stretches make the Road feel like pressure applied to a fragile alliance; its weaker ones can feel like a sequence of themed obstacles on the way to the next plot turn.
How funny, spooky, and dramatic is it?
Agatha All Along is deliberately campy, with spooky imagery and comic irreverence sharing space with grief and tragedy. Hahn’s dry delivery gives those contrasts a strong center, and the tonal movement can make the darker moments land harder. The Guardian praised that movement between comedy and tragedy and called the series “the perfect show for Halloween season.” Its review is an enthusiastic case for the show’s seasonal appeal.

That blend will not work for everyone. TheWrap found an enjoyable, witchy extravaganza, while also framing the series as more Disney than Marvel. TV Guide, by contrast, argued that it was neither funny nor spooky enough to work and did not recapture WandaVision’s wit and originality. Those different reactions point to the central trade-off: the series values theatricality and tonal zigzags over a consistent level of menace or a steady stream of jokes. Do the songs add to the show?
The musical material is part of the storytelling, not just background decoration: songs give the coven a ritualistic, performative way to come together, while the score helps mark the show’s shifts between camp and danger. The recurring motifs can make the series distinctive, but they may also wear thin for viewers who prefer the drama to move without another musical cue. Whether that theatricality feels charming or overemphatic is a matter of taste—and a useful preview of the show’s broader approach.

Apple Music lists the first soundtrack volume, covering episodes 1–5, with 27 songs and a total duration of 1 hour 20 minutes. The catalog listing identifies it as the first volume, not a complete series soundtrack. For fans who collect the show’s music, Music from Agatha All Along is also available as a soundtrack LP; the official store describes it as selected songs and score. The basic setup is clear enough to follow without a close rewatch: Agatha is the witch viewers met in Westview, she has lost her power, and a mysterious teen draws her toward a dangerous magical road. Recognizing the earlier series adds context to her history, but the coven and its journey provide a new story rather than requiring a puzzle-by-puzzle recap of WandaVision.

For viewers hoping the spinoff will reproduce WandaVision’s formal experimentation and surprise, expectations should be more modest. Agatha All Along is a more openly theatrical ensemble fantasy, built around Hahn’s performance, a sequence of trials, and the uneasy formation of a coven.
Verdict
Agatha All Along is a worthwhile return for Kathryn Hahn, whose wickedly engaging lead performance gives the series an identity of its own. Its coven-and-trials format creates room for atmosphere and character, though the ensemble and episodic structure do not always deepen as much as they promise. The songs, camp, and tonal swings are central to its appeal—and the likeliest reasons it will divide viewers. It works best as a witchy, seasonal Marvel side story, not as a promise that WandaVision has simply begun again.
