An early idea would have brought Chubbs Peterson back in Happy’s dreams and introduced a son angry at Happy over his father’s death. Sandler said that concept did not make the final draft; the sequel instead honors Chubbs through references to the character and his legacy.
Why did Happy Gilmore 2 have to be rewritten?
Weathers, who played golf instructor Chubbs Peterson in the original Happy Gilmore, had a major part in the sequel’s original plan. After Weathers died, Sandler said the filmmakers had to change substantial material, including the story itself.
“We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change,” Sandler told Collider’s Steve Weintraub in an interview published July 17, 2025. What was Carl Weathers’ role supposed to be?
Sandler described an early story idea in which Chubbs had a son “who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy,” while Chubbs appeared to Happy in dreams. The interview’s published description says the idea did not make the final draft. It is therefore an account of an early concept, not a plotline in the released film.

How does the sequel honor Chubbs?
Sandler said the filmmakers included references to Chubbs and to how great the character was. Director Kyle Newacheck also emphasized that the character remains central to the film’s spirit: “You can’t make Happy Gilmore without Chubbs Peterson. It doesn’t exist. You can be assured his spirit is throughout the film. He may not be by Happy’s side anymore, but he’s on his shoulder.” Newacheck made the comment in his Collider interview. Collider interview
Netflix’s Tudum describes Easter eggs and references to Chubbs in the sequel, identifying him as Weathers’ character from the original film.
