This is a curated guide to actors who have portrayed gay characters in films, not a measured ranking of the “most popular” performers. A role qualifies here when the character is explicitly identified as gay or the film’s story clearly establishes that identity. Coded or debated portrayals are kept separate rather than presented as settled fact. An actor’s role says nothing about the actor’s own identity.
The available verified examples do not support a reliable list of 15. Rather than fill the count with uncertain pairings, this guide distinguishes confirmed portrayals from interpretations that need qualification.

Clearly identified gay characters
Tom Hanks as Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia
Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a gay lawyer with AIDS who is fired by his law firm and takes legal action. Sony Pictures Classics’ film page discusses Hanks’s selection for the lead in a major motion picture about a gay man with AIDS. The film helped bring a gay protagonist and the stigma surrounding AIDS into a prominent courtroom drama.
Harry Hamlin as Bart McGuire in Making Love
Hamlin plays Bart, a married man who falls in love with another man. Sony Pictures Classics describes Hamlin discussing his role as one of Hollywood’s early leading gay characters. The studio’s film page is a useful point of reference for the film and Hamlin’s account.

Sean Penn as Harvey Milk in Milk
Penn portrays Harvey Milk, the gay San Francisco politician and activist whose life and political work anchor the biographical film. Focus Features identifies Penn in the role on its official film page.
Demetri Martin as Elliot Tiber in Taking Woodstock
Martin plays Elliot Tiber, a closeted gay interior designer whose family’s motel and connection to the Woodstock festival provide the story’s starting point. Focus Features describes the protagonist this way in its film coverage.

Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin in Rustin
Domingo portrays Bayard Rustin, the gay civil-rights organizer who was a key strategist of the 1963 March on Washington. Netflix’s official coverage discusses Domingo’s portrayal and the film’s awards history. The role is a biographical portrayal of a historical figure, rather than a fictional character whose identity is only implied.
Roles that require a caveat
Martin Landau as Leonard in North by Northwest
Landau’s Leonard has often been read as gay or queer-coded, but the film does not state the character’s identity outright. In a Guardian feature on gay-coded film characters, Landau described his interpretation: “I decided to play him as a homosexual, very subtly, because otherwise he would have been just a henchman.” That is Landau’s account of his acting choice, not an explicit label in the film. The Guardian feature discusses the characterization and its ambiguity.

Other readings are not confirmed roles
The same Guardian feature discusses possible closeted or same-sex-attraction readings in films involving Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, James Gandolfini, and Laurie Metcalf. Such interpretations should not be counted as confirmed gay roles without clearer evidence in the film or reliable statements about the character. A suggestive performance, subtext, or audience reading is not equivalent to an explicitly identified character.

Gay roles have appeared in very different kinds of movies: biographical dramas, romances, comedies, and stories where sexuality is encoded in performance or subtext. The documentary The Celluloid Closet traces portrayals of gay men and lesbians across a century of cinema. Sony Pictures says the documentary assembles footage from 120 films; that number describes the footage used in the documentary, not a census of all gay roles or movies. Sony Pictures’ page describes the film.

More recent films can also place queer characters in stories that are not primarily about coming out or acceptance. Netflix describes Single All the Way as a same-sex holiday romance whose story is not structured around those familiar conflicts. The example illustrates how the narrative role of a character can change even when the character’s identity is clear; it does not establish a universal industry trend. Netflix’s coverage discusses the film.
Actor Michael Urie has discussed casting and pressure around queer roles in a Netflix interview. His comments provide a contemporary actor’s perspective, rather than proof of a single rule governing casting across the industry. Read the interview with Urie.

How to compare portrayals
- Identity in the story: Is the character explicitly identified as gay, or is the reading inferred?
- Role in the narrative: Is sexuality central to the plot, one part of a biography, or mostly conveyed through subtext?
- Film context: Consider when the movie was made and what its story chooses to say—or leave unstated.
- Evidence: Separate what the film establishes from an actor’s interpretation or a critic’s reading.
