The headline’s “never” is playful, not a prediction anyone can verify. Public comments from Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem offer a few clues about how they describe their relationship—but they do not establish 15 reasons their marriage will last or reveal the couple’s private life. Their own remarks point instead to themes of privacy, ongoing discovery, family and work, and care around one project they chose to make together.
How their relationship began
Cruz and Bardem first met while making Jamón Jamón in 1992, according to Vanity Fair’s 2026 profile. They reunited on Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008, and their off-screen relationship developed around that production. They married in 2010. Bardem recalled that nothing happened while Cruz was underage.
Those dates establish a public timeline, not a forecast. In a 2026 interview, Cruz said she had known Bardem for 33 years and still felt she was learning about him. “I feel like I’m still learning [in my relationship], you know?” she told Vanity Fair. She connected that feeling to the fact that people continue learning about themselves, too. Her comment describes her experience; it is not a guarantee of how any relationship will unfold.
What Cruz has said about privacy
In 2009, Cruz explained why she did not want to discuss the relationship publicly. In an English translation published by EL PAÍS, she said: “It’s obvious that I have a relationship, but the reason why I don’t want to talk about it is because I want to protect it, since it is very important to me. It’s as simple as that.”

That is evidence of her stated preference at the time, not evidence that keeping a relationship private caused it to endure. It also does not tell us what the couple shares with one another away from public view.
What they have said about recognizing each other
In a 2024 interview account reported by Cadena SER, Cruz recalled telling Bardem that, when she first saw him during Jamón Jamón preproduction, she already knew they would be together and have a family. It is a retrospective account of her impression, not independently verifiable foresight.

Bardem has offered his own personal assessment of Cruz. Vanity Fair quoted him in 2026 saying, “It’s been a lot of years, and I haven’t seen a hint of malice in her.” That is his view of her character, not an objective finding about their marriage.
How Cruz has described balancing work and family
In the same 2024 account, Cruz said she valued being able to choose when and where she worked so she would not have to be separated from her children. This supports a limited point about her stated approach to work and family; it does not establish how the couple divides responsibilities or what arrangements they make privately.

Why one recent film called for a boundary check
In September 2026, Bardem said he and Cruz had reservations about playing a married couple in Búnker. They were interested in the subject, but checked that the project would not manipulate them into a dark place for the camera, according to EL PAÍS’s Venice Film Festival report. Their comments show that they considered the emotional terms of this particular role. They do not establish a general relationship strategy, and acting together is not proof of compatibility.

The available comments support a few attributed observations: Cruz has spoken about protecting the relationship from public discussion, continuing to learn about Bardem, and choosing work with family life in mind. Bardem has spoken warmly about her character, and both had reservations they discussed before taking on one project as a married couple. These are public statements and a timeline—not a proven formula, private knowledge, or grounds to say that either partner will never call a divorce lawyer.
