Accused season 2, episode 6, “Val’s Story,” puts Cobie Smulders at the center of a domestic-abuse survivor story, but its published critical response turns on whether the final act can support the episode’s emotional ambitions. One reviewer praised its casting while faulting the writing at the end; another called it a triumph for survivors while questioning its realism. That tension makes the episode more compelling to discuss than a simple verdict of success or failure.

The episode sits within an anthology designed to make each case a fresh moral puzzle. Sony Pictures Entertainment’s series description says each story begins in court with viewers knowing neither the defendant’s crime nor how events led to prosecution, then tells the story from that defendant’s point of view. The format invites viewers to reconsider what they think they know about a case as context emerges.
What do critics say about the episode?
Rotten Tomatoes displays two critic reviews, which offer a useful contrast rather than a broad consensus. Brittany Frederick of CBR rated the episode 6/10 and wrote, “One of the most well-cast episodes of the show falls apart because of the writing in its final act.” Jasmine Blu of TV Fanatic rated it 4.1/5 and wrote, “It seems Accused just delivered a triumph for domestic violence survivors, even if it was more fantasy than reality.” Both excerpts appear on Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page.

The difference is not simply whether the episode is good or bad. Frederick’s criticism points to a gap between the strength of the casting and the way the story concludes. Blu’s wording credits the survivor-centered impact while flagging a potential distance from realism. Taken together, the reviews suggest that the episode’s emotional effect and its dramatic credibility may not land equally for every viewer.
Does the final act undo the story?
The published criticism establishes a question, not a scene-by-scene answer: does the ending feel earned by the character work that precedes it, or does it ask the audience to accept a turn the writing has not adequately prepared? Frederick’s review explicitly faults the final act, but the available episode sources do not provide a detailed account of its events. It would be misleading to claim a specific plot mechanism or explain exactly how the story resolves without reliable scene-level evidence.

For viewers, the most useful way to weigh that criticism is to consider what they want from this kind of drama. If emotional recognition and a survivor-focused perspective matter most, Blu’s response indicates why the episode may resonate. If the credibility of a dramatic conclusion is essential, Frederick’s objection is a reason to approach expectations cautiously. The two reviews do not settle the question for every viewer; they identify the tension that defines the episode’s reception.
Who made the episode, and what is its rating?
Maile Meloy is credited as both writer and director, and Howard Gordon is also credited as a screenwriter on the Rotten Tomatoes episode listing. Apple TV rates the episode TV-14 and lists advisories for suggestive dialogue, sexual content, language, and violence. Those advisories may help viewers decide whether the episode is appropriate for them; they do not, on their own, describe how the material is handled.
