Madison police identified the shooter in the December 16, 2024, attack at Abundant Life Christian School as Natalie L. Rupnow, a 15-year-old freshman student who went by Samantha. Police said a teenage student and a substitute teacher were killed, six other people were injured, and Rupnow died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The identification was made while the investigation was still developing. Police had not established a definitive motive, had not determined whether anyone was specifically targeted, and warned that documents, photographs, social-media posts, and other material circulating online had not been authenticated.

What police confirmed about the Abundant Life shooting

Madison police said the shooting occurred on the second floor of Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, during a study hall attended by students from mixed grade levels. Police said one person outside the classroom was also injured when a bullet entered an adjacent room.

According to the Madison Police Department’s account:

  • A teenage student and a substitute teacher were killed.
  • Six other people were injured.
  • Two students initially suffered life-threatening injuries.
  • A teacher and three students suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.
  • The attack involved one shooter.
  • Rupnow died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said a handgun was used. Officers recovered two firearms at the school, but authorities said only one was used in the shooting. Investigators initially declined to provide additional details about the weapons because the case remained active.

The victims’ names were released by Dane County authorities on December 18, 2024. Madison police said the department itself would not release victim or survivor names, citing Wisconsin victims’ rights protections, including Marsy’s Law. Any later publication using names or family descriptions should rely on official records or family-authorized reporting.

The response timeline

Madison police were dispatched at 10:57 a.m. local time on December 16, 2024. The first law-enforcement officers entered the building at approximately 11 a.m.

The department’s fact page gives a more precise account of the entry sequence: Madison police officers entered at 11:01 a.m., 24 seconds after the first entry recorded in the computer-aided-dispatch timeline. The distinction reflects the difference between the broader law-enforcement timeline and the timing recorded for Madison police officers.

Police also corrected an early error about the first 911 call. The initial account said a second-grade student had made the call. Updated information from Dane County Public Safety Communications showed that the first caller was a second-grade teacher.

Who police identified

Police identified Natalie L. Rupnow as a 15-year-old freshman at Abundant Life Christian School. Authorities referred to her as female and said she went by Samantha.

Because Rupnow was a minor and the incident involved suicide and children who survived the attack, the responsible description is limited to what authorities formally confirmed. There is no evidentiary basis in the initial police account for adding claims about her personality, ideology, relationships, gender identity, alleged bullying, or intended targets.

Motive remained unconfirmed

At an early news conference, then-Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said the motive appeared to be a “combination of factors,” but he did not identify those factors. Police said detectives would examine possible bullying, relationships, family circumstances, social-media activity, and writings that might help explain the attack. Those subjects were investigative avenues, not findings.

The department repeatedly cautioned the public not to treat material circulating online as authentic. Detectives were pursuing search warrants and subpoenas for social-media and technology-company records and expected to review a large volume of digital evidence.

That warning applied to purported manifestos, photographs, online posts, alleged ideological affiliations, and accounts attributed to Rupnow. Unless a later official source authenticates a particular item, it should not be presented as evidence of motive or intent. Reproducing alleged writings can also amplify unverified claims and cause additional harm to surviving students and families.

Police said they had not determined whether anyone was specifically targeted. The department’s fact page stated that everyone in the classroom was placed in danger. That is different from establishing that the shooter selected a particular victim or group.

Later criminal case involving Rupnow’s father

The shooting investigation continued after the initial identification. Madison police said detectives were interviewing people who knew Rupnow, examining digital evidence, and reviewing evidence from family homes. The department cautioned that determining motive could take weeks or longer.

In May 2025, prosecutors charged Jeffrey Rupnow, Natalie Rupnow’s father, with two felony counts alleging that he intentionally gave, sold, or loaned a dangerous weapon to a person under 18. He also faced one felony count of contributing to the delinquency of a child.

Those charges concern alleged access to firearms and are not a finding that he is guilty. The criminal complaint, as summarized by the Associated Press, alleged that investigators recovered a 9 mm Glock and a .22-caliber Sig Sauer and that the father provided firearm access and information related to the gun safe. Those details should be attributed to the complaint or prosecutors rather than treated as adjudicated facts.

In May 2026, a judge declined to dismiss the charges, rejecting arguments that the complaint was legally insufficient or that the relevant statute was unconstitutional as applied. In July 2026, an appeals court rejected the father’s attempt to have the case dismissed. The case remained scheduled for trial in March 2027. A pending criminal case does not establish that the allegations will be proven at trial.

A separate review of the police response

On January 14, 2026, Madison police announced a formal review of the department’s response to the shooting. The review is being conducted with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services and the National Policing Institute.

Its purpose is to examine coordination among responding agencies, identify what worked and what challenges occurred, and develop improvements for future critical incidents. Madison police said the review team was examining:

  • 911 logs;
  • police video;
  • department policies;
  • incident reports;
  • media coverage; and
  • information gathered through focus groups with public-safety professionals.

The review is separate from the criminal investigation. Its existence should not be described as proof that officers acted improperly, nor should its eventual findings be conflated with the criminal case involving Jeffrey Rupnow.

Support for students, families, and survivors

The Wisconsin Department of Justice said its Office of School Safety deployed a Critical Incident Response Team after the shooting. The team assisted with reunification, counseling, stabilization, and identifying people who might need longer-term mental-health services.

The state’s Office of Crime Victim Services also identified crime-victim compensation as a possible source of help for qualifying expenses, including medical care, mental-health services, wage loss, and related costs. Eligibility and covered expenses depend on the program’s requirements; families should use official Wisconsin DOJ victim-support information for current guidance.

Wisconsin DOJ guidance for talking with children after a violent event recommends limiting their exposure to graphic media, giving clear factual information without graphic details, validating their feelings, and allowing conversations to continue over time without forcing a child to talk. Children may need different forms of support as their understanding and reactions change.

Reporting note: This account keeps the December 16, 2024, event date visible because later court proceedings and administrative reviews can otherwise make the incident appear to have occurred recently. It also distinguishes police statements and criminal allegations from facts established in court.
