Spoilers for the 2018 film A Simple Favor. Emily Nelson is not who she says she is: she was born Faith McL landen and has an identical twin, Hope. When Hope reappears and demands money, Faith kills her, uses her body to fake her own death, and plans to collect the insurance money. Stephanie’s investigation and livestream ultimately expose the deception and Emily’s final attempt to escape accountability.
Who is Emily really?
Emily Nelson is the identity Faith McLanden has made for herself. Hope is Faith’s identical twin sister. The sisters grew up in an abusive home and became estranged after an attempt to kill their father, Bruce, by setting part of the childhood home on fire. The past they share is the key to understanding why Hope’s return threatens Faith’s carefully maintained life.

Why does Emily fake her death?
Hope resurfaces and demands a million dollars, threatening to tell police about the sisters’ father. Faith sees a way to remove Hope and profit at the same time. She drowns her sister, puts her own wedding ring on Hope’s finger, and leaves the body to be identified as Emily’s. She expects her husband, Sean, to claim Emily’s life-insurance proceeds while she disappears abroad. Netflix Tudum’s recap gives the policy amount as $4 million; that is a fictional detail in the film, not a real-world figure.
How does Stephanie uncover the scheme?
After Emily is believed dead, Stephanie and Sean begin a relationship. Emily later returns with a story meant to explain away the body: she claims the dead woman was her twin and that she had fled an abusive husband. Stephanie acts as though she accepts the explanation, but she is trying to get Emily to confess on camera.
#1 Best Overall
- A SIMPLE FAVOR, directed by Paul Feig, centers around Stephanie (Anna Kendrick), a mommy vlogger who seeks to uncover the truth behind her best friend Emily's (Blake Lively) sudden disappearance from their small town. Stephanie is joined by Emily's husband Sean (Henry Golding) in this stylish thriller filled with twists and betrayals, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.
The plan falls apart inside the house. Emily disrupts the recording setup and shoots Sean. Stephanie’s livestream captures the confrontation, making Emily’s confession and the shooting public rather than allowing her to control the story.
Does Emily get caught, and what happens to Sean and Stephanie?
Emily flees, is hit by Darren’s car, and is taken into custody. Sean survives. The film’s ending cards—not an extended sequence showing each later event—say that Stephanie becomes a successful vlogger and starts a cold-case agency, Sean heads a literature department at UC Berkeley, and Emily is serving 20 years in prison for killing her father and sister and attempting to kill Sean.

What the ending says about Stephanie’s livestream
The livestream turns Stephanie’s online persona into the means by which Emily’s last cover-up is exposed. That is an interpretation of how the plot works, rather than a stated explanation of the filmmakers’ intent. In concrete terms, the stream records the confrontation, and Emily is apprehended after the shooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The film is based on Darcey Bell’s novel A Simple Favor: A Novel, first published March 21, 2017 (ISBN 9780062497772). Publisher-distributed book information describes Stephanie as a widow and stay-at-home mommy blogger, and the story begins with a school-pickup favor before Emily disappears. Those details establish the source novel and its premise; they do not establish that the book and film have identical reveals or endings.
