Scroll published reader Chittajit Mitra’s compiled list of 103 Indian-language books translated into English and published in 2024 on December 31, 2024. It offers a discovery route into fiction and nonfiction across a range of languages, but the number is the list’s stated count—not a verified census of every such book published that year.
What the 103-book list is—and what it is not
Mitra’s list, published by Scroll on December 31, 2024, is a reader-compiled collection titled “A reader compiled a list of 103 Indian language books translated into English and published in 2024.” Its subtitle describes “A rich variety of fiction and nonfiction in translation.” The count belongs to this compilation; it should not be read as a market-wide total or proof that every eligible book was included.
For a reader, the list is useful as a starting point rather than a ranking. Entries commonly identify a book’s title, author or editor, translator, source language, and publisher, making it possible to follow the work of translators as well as discover books. The available examples span several languages, but they do not establish a complete inventory or a language-by-language tally.
Examples that show the range
The surfaced entries include novels, poetry, anthologies, mythology, and nonfiction or biographical work. These examples illustrate variety; they are not a complete account of the 103 titles.

- Witnesses of Remembrance: Selected Newer Poems by Kunwar Narain was translated from Hindi by Apurva Narain.
- The Divine Sword by Reeta Chowdhury was translated from Assamese by Reeta Borbora.
- Fool Bahadur by Jayanath Pati was translated by Abhay K.
- How to Love in Sanskrit: Poems was edited and translated by Anusha S. Rao and Suhas Mahesh.
- The Big Book of Odia Literature was edited by Manu Dash and translated by multiple translators.
Other surfaced entries include translations or editions of works by Rabindranath Tagore, Kalki, Gulzar, and Qurratulain Hyder. The examples point to the range of source languages—including Malayalam, Marathi, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Assamese, Magahi, Sanskrit, Bangla, Odia, and Hindustani—without establishing that this is the full language set.
How to use the list to choose a book
Start with the reading experience you want, then use the entry details to identify the edition and translation. Where an entry lists more than one translator or source language, check the book’s own description for the scope of that edition.

- Choose a form or subject. The examples include fiction, poems, anthologies, mythology, and nonfiction, but the list does not establish that these categories are represented equally.
- Look at the translator and source language. The translator is part of the book’s identity: an English edition is also a particular translation of a work from another language.
- Confirm the edition before buying or borrowing. Retailer listings can vary by language and format. Check that the listing is for the English translation and the edition you want; current stock was not established.
Why the number needs careful attribution
The headline’s “103” is the count stated for Mitra’s compilation, not an independently audited total. The article’s embedded post also quotes Mitra recalling that 124 translated books were collated for 2023 with help from contributors. That, too, is his description of the previous year’s collection effort, not an independent count of the full publishing market.
Accordingly, the soundest way to cite the collection is as Mitra’s reader-compiled list of 103 books. It is a useful discovery resource, but the information available does not establish systematic inclusion checks, exhaustive coverage, a quality ranking, or comparative judgments about the translations.
