Vande Mataram has three histories that should not be confused: its appearance as literature associated with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Anandamath, its adoption as a nationalist song, and its history as recorded sound. The first two are documented in the sources cited here; they do not establish when or by whom the song was first recorded.
From literary composition to nationalist song
Vande Mataram is associated with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and his novel Anandamath. The Ministry of Defence’s Rashtraparv account dates the song’s first appearance in the literary journal Bangadarshan to 7 November 1875. That is the date given by this government account, rather than a date independently established by the other sources cited here. Rashtraparv: “Vande Mataram”
The song later circulated as a symbol of India’s freedom movement. That political history is distinct from its initial publication: a printed literary work becoming a nationalist song does not, by itself, establish when an audio recording was made.
Why Vande Mataram became contentious
The dispute concerned the song’s meaning and whether it was suitable for shared national use. Nehru’s letter to Urdu writer Ali Sardar Jafri, dated 1 September 1937, is contemporaneous evidence of arguments being discussed at the time, including objections linked to the song’s place in Anandamath and its religious or political meaning. The letter does not justify assigning one motive to every critic or participant. The Nehru Archive: “To Ali Sardar Jafri (1 September 1937)”

A later Rajya Sabha Secretariat synopsis summarizes a recommendation to use the first two stanzas at national gatherings. It is a retrospective parliamentary summary, not the same kind of evidence as Nehru’s letter. Read together, the sources indicate a debate about the song’s suitability and interpretation, not a single, uniform objection. Rajya Sabha Secretariat: Session 269 synopsis
What national status did it receive?
On 24 January 1950, at the Constituent Assembly’s final meeting, the statement reproduced by the Press Information Bureau named Jana Gana Mana as India’s National Anthem and said Vande Mataram “shall be honoured equally with Jana Gana Mana and shall have equal status with it.” This establishes equal status in that statement while preserving the distinction between the National Song and the National Anthem; the two designations are not interchangeable. The later summary of the 1937 recommendation concerns the first two stanzas for national gatherings. That specific recommendation should not be confused with the full literary text of Vande Mataram or with the 1950 statement on national status.
What the recorded history can—and cannot—establish
The official sources cited here do not provide an authoritative discography, a primary audio source, or a verifiable recording date and performer for the earliest sound recording. They therefore do not establish a reliable chronology of Vande Mataram recordings. A retrospective political account mentions recordings circulating abroad but does not identify a recording or establish its date or provenance. Prime Minister of India: 2025 commemoration address

Accordingly, “recorded history” can responsibly refer here to the documented written history: publication, political circulation, debate and national status. It cannot support a claim about the first singer, recording medium, release date or earliest known audio. Printed publication and political performance are not evidence of a sound recording.
