A Quiet Place: Day One shifts the franchise’s sound-driven survival story from a family’s struggle to a citywide catastrophe. Set during the first invasion day in New York, it finds its strongest material not in making every scare bigger, but in the quiet, vulnerable connection between Samira and Eric as they try to cross a city turned hostile by noise.
What is A Quiet Place: Day One about?
This prequel follows Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), who returns to New York City just as creatures that hunt by sound attack. With her cat, Frodo, and an unexpected ally, Eric (Joseph Quinn), she navigates a suddenly silent city. Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou also star. The film is rated PG-13 for terror and violent content, including bloody images.

Michael Sarnoski directed and wrote the screenplay. The story is by Sarnoski and John Krasinski, based on characters created by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. Krasinski also produced, alongside Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller. Paramount describes the film as a continuation of the A Quiet Place universe; in practice, it works as a prequel and sideways entry, leaving the Abbott family behind to focus on new characters and a different setting.
Why does the city change the franchise’s tension?
The earlier films build much of their suspense around contained spaces and a family learning how to survive within them. Here, the threat spreads across New York. Streets, crowds, and the ordinary noise of a large city become part of the danger, giving the invasion a broader scale than a single household can suggest.

That scale does not automatically make every sequence more frightening. The film’s tension comes from watching people reckon with a world whose familiar sounds have become liabilities. Its quieter approach can make the danger feel close and personal, even when the setting is enormous. Some critics found the scares familiar or the action less immersive than in the earlier films; others valued the film’s tender, wistful character passages. Those reactions point to different measures of suspense, spectacle, and emotional stakes rather than one simple verdict on whether the movie is “scarier.”
What works best: the performances and the wordless moments
Nyong’o and Quinn are the emotional center. Their performances give weight to a relationship that has to develop amid crisis, often without the reassurance of extended conversation. The pauses and small gestures matter: silence is not only a rule for staying alive, but also a space in which the characters reveal fear, care, and trust.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus describes the film as “Grounded in raw humanity by Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, this sideways entry into A Quiet Place finds fresh notes of fright to play amid the silence.” Its audience summary calls it “A more sedate experience than what A Quiet Place usually provides,” praising Nyong’o’s performance and “a certain feline charm.” These are aggregator summaries, not reviews by individual critics or audience members, but they capture the film’s emphasis on human connection over relentless action.
Where the film may disappoint
Viewers expecting a steady escalation of jump scares or large-scale action may find the film restrained. The city offers a wider canvas, but critics have differed on how effectively the action uses it: some found the scares familiar, while others questioned the action’s impact or thought the origin-story narrative felt thin.

- If they hear you, they hunt you! Silence is survival in these 3 terrifyingly suspenseful thrillers.
The trade-off is deliberate in effect, even if it will not suit every viewer. Day One is more interested in what survival means to these particular people than in adding a new, comprehensive explanation of the franchise’s creatures or rules. It offers a change of perspective and setting more than a wholesale reinvention of the premise.

Think of the film as a character-focused detour into the first day of the invasion. Its distinguishing ideas are the urban environment and the bond between two strangers, not a return to the Abbott family’s domestic survival story. For viewers who value the franchise’s sound-based suspense but also want a more intimate, melancholy drama, that shift is the point. Those looking chiefly for a new set of rules or a more action-heavy sequel may find less novelty here.

In an Associated Press interview, Sarnoski said of Krasinski’s early support, “(John) really helped me early on. Then he let me run free and explore things.” That freedom is reflected in a film that keeps the franchise premise but gives its attention to a different city and a more self-contained emotional story.
Release and viewing availability
Paramount’s August 26, 2024 announcement said the film had earned over $261 million worldwide “to date.” That is a studio-reported figure as of that announcement, not a current box-office total.
Paramount announced a Paramount+ streaming launch in the United States and Canada for August 27, 2024. That dated announcement does not establish where the film streams today or in other territories. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists Netflix and Paramount+ for streaming and Fandango for rental or purchase, but service catalogs and transactional options vary by location and change over time. Check local listings for current availability.
