Ally tells Jack that her tour has been canceled, framing the news as a chance for them to spend time together. Jack recognizes that she has given up work to care for him. He accepts an invitation to join her onstage for “Shallow,” but never arrives.

While Ally performs, Jack cooks a steak for their dog, takes pills, and goes into the garage. The film establishes that he has died there. It does not depict the death graphically.
Why does Jack die?
The film connects Jack’s despair to a convergence of addiction, shame, trauma, career fears, health problems, and his belief that he has become a burden. It does not provide a single cause or a clinical diagnosis. In particular, the ending should not be read as Jack making a noble sacrifice for Ally: Bobby tells her not to blame herself, and his death does not resolve the couple’s problems.

Addiction and relapse
Jack’s substance misuse has been part of the story well before the final scene. After his disastrous Grammys appearance, he goes to rehab; the film leaves uncertainty about how secure his recovery is. Shame, trauma, and health
Jack is ashamed of his behavior and appears to fear that it is hurting Ally. The film also gives context for his vulnerability through his past and his declining ability to perform. In the screenplay, an early scene has him struggle to hear a song and ask for it to be turned off; the script is a hosted copy and may differ from the released cut, so it is evidence of the story’s hearing-loss theme, not a substitute for the finished film. Cooper described the film’s aim as helping audiences understand “the human plight” and recognizing that early trauma can have lasting ramifications. Those are the director’s reflections on the story, not a clinical explanation for Jack’s death. What does Ally’s final song mean?
At a memorial, Ally introduces herself as “Ally Maine” and sings “I’ll Never Love Again,” a song Jack wrote but had never performed publicly. A flashback to the couple playing it privately connects the tribute to their life together. The moment shows Ally carrying their relationship into public view; it offers emotional closure to the film, not proof that her grief is over.

How does the 2018 ending differ from earlier versions?
A Star Is Born has been adapted for the screen several times; Cooper called the 2018 film the fourth screen version in a 2018 interview. Secondary reporting says the male lead dies by drowning in the 1937 and 1954 films, while the 1976 character dies in a car crash. The 2018 film instead ends with Jack’s death in the garage and Ally’s memorial performance.
