A Quiet Place: Day One is broadly successful because it changes what the franchise is about without abandoning what makes it work. Michael Sarnoski’s 99-minute prequel moves the action from the Abbott family’s rural home to Manhattan on the first day of the sound-sensitive alien invasion, then places two strangers—a terminally ill woman named Samira and a stranded law student named Eric—at the center of the disaster. The result is a larger-scale thriller that is often tense, but whose most distinctive qualities are melancholy, tenderness, and the performances of Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn.

The first reviews were mostly positive rather than universally ecstatic. Critics generally agreed that Nyong’o gives the film its emotional force and that her relationship with Quinn gives the franchise a fresh human center. The reservations were equally clear: the scares are less consistently frightening than those in the first two films, some plot mechanics are underdeveloped, and the movie expands the setting more successfully than it expands the creatures’ mythology.

What the first reviews say about A Quiet Place: Day One

The initial critical response, collected before the film’s June 28, 2024 U.S. theatrical release, leaned favorable. The strongest agreement was not about a particular jump scare or action sequence. It was about Lupita Nyong’o’s performance as Samira, a woman confronting an invasion while already dealing with terminal cancer.

In its June 27 first-reviews roundup, Rotten Tomatoes highlighted Nyong’o as one of the film’s principal strengths. The review coverage repeatedly emphasized how much she communicates through expression, posture, hesitation, and movement in a film where spoken dialogue is often dangerous. Samira’s fear is not presented as a generic survival reaction. She is exhausted, angry, grieving, stubborn, and capable of tenderness, sometimes within the same scene.

That performance gives the prequel a different emotional temperature from the earlier films. The original A Quiet Place was built around a family trying to protect itself in an isolated environment. Day One is more openly a story about strangers deciding that another person’s survival matters. The film still uses silence as a suspense mechanism, but its central question is not only whether Samira and Eric can avoid the creatures. It is why they continue helping each other when escape seems increasingly unlikely.

Why the Samira-and-Eric relationship works

Joseph Quinn’s Eric is a useful counterpoint to Samira. He begins as a vulnerable outsider, a British law student separated from the people and places he knows. He is not introduced as a conventional action hero, and the film’s tension often comes from watching him improvise rather than dominate a situation.

The early reviews generally saw the chemistry between Nyong’o and Quinn as one of the film’s assets. Their characters develop trust under extreme pressure, but the bond is not treated as a conventional romance. It is closer to a brief, intense friendship or found-family connection: two people who might never have met under ordinary circumstances become responsible for each other in a city collapsing around them.

That choice helps explain why some critics described the movie as a melancholy quest story or a found-family drama inside a horror film. Samira has a personal destination, Eric has his own reasons to keep moving, and their paths gradually become shared. The emotional payoff depends less on learning a new rule about the monsters than on understanding what each character is willing to risk for the other.

Frodo is more than a cute mascot

Samira’s cat, Frodo, became one of the most discussed elements of the early response. The cat is a practical responsibility, an emotional anchor, and a source of suspense: in a world where noise can attract instant death, an animal’s behavior cannot be completely controlled.

Critics frequently praised Frodo as a scene-stealing presence. The cat also gives Samira a reason to keep moving and a recognizable piece of her old life to protect. Frodo’s presence reinforces the film’s concern with care: survival is not just an individual calculation when another living being depends on you.

There is a trade-off. As The Guardian’s review noted, Frodo can sometimes seem implausibly unflappable. The character works best as a tonal device and emotional symbol, but viewers looking for strict animal realism may find the cat’s ability to remain near the action convenient. That is a fair criticism without erasing the fact that Frodo gives the film much of its personality.

Manhattan makes the silence more dramatic

The move to New York is the film’s most obvious expansion. The premise gains a productive contradiction: Manhattan is normally defined by traffic, crowds, sirens, construction, voices, and an almost constant mechanical roar. After the invasion, those familiar sounds become potential death sentences.

The setting lets the film stage disaster on a much larger scale than the earlier domestic and rural environments. Streets fill with panic, buildings become traps, and the city’s density creates more possible sources of sound and more places for the creatures to emerge. The Guardian praised the city-smashing disaster-movie dimension while also recognizing that the story remains personal.

That balance is important. Day One is not simply a spectacle film about watching New York fall. Its best sequences use the city’s scale to isolate Samira and Eric. A crowd can provide temporary cover, but it can also create uncontrollable noise. A familiar public space can offer shelter, yet its doors, alarms, elevators, and plumbing all become threats. The urban setting broadens the franchise’s visual vocabulary while preserving the basic suspense rule: the characters must think about every sound before they make it.

Is it as scary as the first two films?

The short answer from the first reviews was generally no. That does not mean the film abandons horror or fails to create tension. It means that many critics found its scares more familiar, less immersive, or less consistently effective than those in the 2018 original and its sequel.

The earlier films were especially disciplined about turning ordinary household actions into suspense: walking across a floor, opening a door, preparing food, or communicating with family members could become terrifying. Day One has strong pursuit scenes and moments that depend on breath-holding silence, but its larger disaster-film structure sometimes makes the danger feel more conventional. The creatures are still frightening in the right circumstances, yet the novelty of the franchise’s central idea has diminished.

The early Rotten Tomatoes roundup described the film as not quite as terrifying as its predecessors, and Time similarly cautioned that viewers seeking the year’s most nerve-rattling horror might be disappointed. In other words, “tense” is a safer description than “the scariest entry.” The movie’s suspense is real, but its emotional drama often takes priority over sustained terror.

Where the film’s ambition falls short

The main criticism is that the film broadens the world without fully deepening it. Its Manhattan setting supplies new scale, but it does not necessarily provide new information about the alien creatures. Several set pieces use familiar franchise mechanics, and some of the film’s action beats feel like variations on situations viewers have already seen.

The alien egg-nursery material is a particularly clear example of uneven world-building. It introduces a potentially important piece of the creatures’ biology and behavior, then does relatively little with it. That can leave the mythology feeling more suggestive than developed.

There is also a structural tension between the character drama and the horror-action plot. When the film concentrates on Samira, Eric, and Frodo, it has a distinctive identity. When it pauses that relationship for a familiar chase or creature attack, the story can feel as though it is fulfilling franchise obligations rather than advancing its strongest idea.

Variety’s skeptical response captured this concern by questioning whether the film’s “sound and fury” leads to a sufficiently satisfying payoff. Other reservations from the early coverage made a similar point: the movie’s emotional intentions are clearer and more developed than some of its plot mechanics. The result is a film that can be moving even when its mythology feels thin.

How it fits into the franchise

A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel and spinoff, not a continuation of the Abbott family’s central storyline. It dramatizes the beginning of the invasion in New York and introduces new protagonists. Michael Sarnoski directed and wrote the screenplay; the story is credited to Sarnoski and John Krasinski, and the film is based on characters created by Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and Krasinski.

Lupita Nyong’o plays Samira, Joseph Quinn plays Eric, Alex Wolff plays Reuben, and Djimon Hounsou reprises Henri from A Quiet Place Part II. Henri is the major returning character, providing a link to the established franchise without making the Abbott family the focus. Time described the shift away from the Emily Blunt-led Abbott family as a deliberate change in direction.

That separation is one of the film’s advantages. New viewers do not need the Abbott family’s entire history to understand the immediate premise, while returning viewers receive continuity through the invasion timeline and Henri. At the same time, the prequel does not radically reinvent the mythology. Its contribution is primarily geographic and emotional: it shows the catastrophe through a different pair of eyes and asks what compassion looks like at the end of the world.

Current critical-consensus snapshot

The film’s aggregate scores support a measured verdict rather than a claim of universal enthusiasm. As recorded in the research snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes lists an 86% Tomatometer score from 288 critic reviews and a 72% audience score from more than 2,500 verified ratings. Metacritic lists a 68 metascore from 53 critic reviews, including 41 positive, 10 mixed, and 2 negative reviews.

Those figures should not be confused with the original “first reviews” response. The first-review article was published June 27, 2024, before the U.S. release on June 28. The later scores reflect a larger body of criticism and audience reaction. The difference between the aggregators is informative: Day One was broadly liked, but critics did not agree that its emotional strengths outweighed its familiar scares and underdeveloped story elements to the same degree.

Where to watch or own A Quiet Place: Day One

Paramount identifies the film as a 99-minute, PG-13 horror/thriller and lists digital availability. Paramount’s home-entertainment information confirms 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital formats. U.S. subscription and transactional listings have included Paramount+ and Amazon Video, but streaming and rental availability can change by country, date, and licensing arrangement, so readers should verify the current option before paying.

For viewers who want to compare the film with the earlier entries or build a physical franchise collection, the A Quiet Place: Day One 4K UHD Blu-ray is the most direct ownership option. A standard A Quiet Place: Day One Blu-ray or DVD is a sensible alternative for readers who do not need 4K. The exact edition, packaging, price, and stock should be checked at publication time; this article does not assume that every retailer listing or collection contains the same extras.

Verdict: a human story inside a familiar horror machine

The first reviews got the film’s central trade-off right. A Quiet Place: Day One is not as consistently frightening or mythologically expansive as it might have been. Its creatures, set pieces, and plot machinery can feel familiar, and the nursery material hints at a larger world without fully exploring it.

But the movie has a clear reason to exist beyond extending the brand. Nyong’o gives Samira a textured inner life, Quinn makes Eric’s vulnerability and resourcefulness convincing, and Frodo adds both emotional warmth and a recurring source of danger. Their journey turns a prequel about the first hours of an alien invasion into a story about two strangers choosing connection while the social world around them disappears.

That makes the fairest assessment more specific than “good” or “bad.” Day One succeeds more as a contained human survival drama within the A Quiet Place universe than as a major expansion of its mythology. Viewers expecting the stripped-down domestic terror of the 2018 original may find the horror more conventional. Viewers willing to accept a larger, more melancholy character story will find a tense and often surprisingly tender addition anchored by performances that are stronger than the screenplay surrounding them.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A Quiet Place: Day One is a broadly liked but imperfect prequel. It offers a bigger setting and credible tension, yet its real distinction is the tender, melancholy relationship among Samira, Eric, and Frodo. Choose it for the performances and human survival story rather than expecting a mythology-defining or relentlessly terrifying franchise chapter.
