Hong Kong International Airport’s giant cat was a real temporary installation—but it is no longer on display. Titled “A Moment to Purr”, or 旅途上的「喵」 in the airport’s Chinese-language materials, the oversized ginger cat appeared during HKIA’s Easter program from April 3 through May 2, 2026.

Roughly 8 metres long, 7 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, the reclining cat was designed to give tired passengers and airport visitors a playful pause. Its ears and tail moved, while a nearby digital kiosk let people simulate feeding and petting it, prompting responsive, virtual-pet-style reactions.

A sleeping giant in the arrivals hall

The installation’s appeal came from its unlikely setting. Instead of appearing in a park, shopping centre or festival grounds, the enormous orange cat occupied an international airport arrivals area—a place normally associated with baggage, queues, reunions and onward travel.

“A Moment to Purr” presented the cat as a soft-looking, oversized companion resting in the middle of that busy environment. Passengers stopped to photograph it, take selfies and watch its moving ears and tail. The result was less a conventional sculpture than a temporary airport attraction built around surprise, recognition and interaction.

Its scale was substantial without making it feel aggressive or monumental. Contemporary coverage described a reclining ginger cat approximately 8 m long, 7 m wide and 3.5 m high. The movement in its ears and tail gave the otherwise stationary figure a sense of life.

How visitors interacted with the cat

The attraction was inspired by the idea of a virtual pet. A dedicated digital kiosk allowed visitors to interact with the cat through simulated actions, including feeding and petting. The cat then responded playfully in real time.

That interactive element distinguished the installation from a large static photo prop. Visitors were not simply standing beside an oversized object; they could perform a simple action and receive a reaction. The concept was especially suited to an airport, where a short, low-commitment activity can fill a few spare minutes without requiring a separate attraction visit.

The experience was also designed to work visually. Even people who did not use the kiosk could see the giant reclining cat, observe its movements and photograph it. Those who did interact with it encountered a digital, virtual-pet-style layer on top of the physical installation.

There is, however, a location discrepancy in the airport’s currently accessible event information. HKIA’s present page lists the attraction under Terminal 2, Arrivals Level L5, in the non-restricted area, with 24-hour access. The reason for the difference is not documented. It may reflect later location metadata or a page update, but there is no reliable evidence that the physical cat was moved there.

The most accurate way to summarize the location is therefore: the installation was reported in Terminal 1 Arrivals Hall A during its historical run, while HKIA’s current event page lists it under Terminal 2 Arrivals Level L5.

Part of HKIA’s Easter 2026 program

“A Moment to Purr” was one attraction within a wider Easter program at Hong Kong International Airport. Other associated activities reported around the holiday period included:

  • Spring Serenade, featuring a local harmonica band and pianist;
  • Bunny Bounce performances by entertainers in rabbit costumes; and
  • an instant-photo activity connected with the cat installation during the early-April holiday period.

These activities belonged to the broader Easter programming and should not be confused with features of the cat itself. The sculpture’s own experience centred on the large reclining figure, its moving ears and tail, and the interactive kiosk.

Why the installation worked as an airport attraction

Airports are designed for movement, but passengers often spend long periods waiting: for arriving relatives, connecting flights, baggage or ground transport. A striking installation can turn that otherwise unstructured time into a small shared experience.

The cat also created an immediate contrast with the airport’s functional surroundings. A traveller might arrive expecting signs, luggage belts and meeting points, then encounter a giant sleeping animal that reacts to visitors. That contrast made the installation easy to understand without extensive instructions. Its subject was familiar, its scale was surprising, and its digital interaction added a reason to stop.

The virtual-pet concept was particularly appropriate for a family-oriented Easter event. Feeding and petting are actions visitors can understand immediately, while the cat’s responses provided a moment of light entertainment rather than a formal educational or cultural program.

Is the giant cat still at Hong Kong airport?

No evidence reviewed shows that the installation continued after its scheduled end date. “A Moment to Purr” was scheduled to run from April 3 to May 2, 2026. As of August 12, 2026, it should be treated as a past temporary attraction, not a feature that travellers can currently visit.

The airport’s event page remains online and still describes the attraction, which may create the impression that the cat is active. An online listing is not confirmation that the physical installation remains in place. No reviewed source establishes that the sculpture was extended, relocated, preserved or converted into a permanent exhibit after May 2.

What is known—and what is not

The documented facts establish the installation’s title, dates, approximate dimensions, interaction method and event-era location. They do not establish several details sometimes attached to viral photographs or informal write-ups.

  • It has not been established that the cat was inflatable.
  • No named manufacturing studio or artist has been confirmed in the reviewed material.
  • No visitor-count figures, construction cost or sponsorship arrangement have been documented.
  • No commercial merchandise line or licensed collectible has been confirmed.
  • “Catzilla” was an unofficial nickname used by a secondary article, not the airport’s official name.

For that reason, the most precise description is a temporary giant interactive cat installation, rather than a permanent sculpture, inflatable attraction or branded commercial product.

The lasting image

“A Moment to Purr” was a small, deliberately whimsical intervention in a very large transport system. Its story was not about replacing the airport’s core function, but about changing how a traveller experienced a few minutes inside it.

A giant ginger cat lying across an arrivals hall made an ordinary airport pause photographable and unexpectedly playful. The moving ears and tail supplied the visual joke; the kiosk gave visitors something to do; and the Easter setting made the attraction feel seasonal rather than permanent. Once the scheduled run ended, what remained was the image of an international gateway briefly transformed into a virtual pet’s playground.
