A Discovery of Witches draws on real manuscript history and Deborah Harkness’s scholarship, but its enchanted book and supernatural alchemy are fiction. The real Ashmole 782 is missing; the real Book of Soyga is a separate manuscript Harkness says she encountered while researching John Dee. The novel’s alchemical passages, she has explained, combine material from many texts rather than reproduce one historical recipe book.
What is Ashmole 782 in A Discovery of Witches?
In the novel, Ashmole 782 is an enchanted manuscript at the center of the story. The historical manuscript bearing that number is not known to be magical: Deborah Harkness told the publisher that the real Ashmole 782 is missing, and that she had wondered what it might contain. The fictional book turns that gap in the historical record into a supernatural premise. The publisher’s author interview distinguishes Harkness’s speculation about the missing manuscript from the novel’s invention.
The number connects the fiction to Elias Ashmole, the seventeenth-century English antiquarian and scholar. His books and manuscripts were first kept at the Ashmolean Museum and later transferred to Oxford’s Bodleian Library in the nineteenth century. That real institutional history gives the novel a tangible setting for its imagined discovery; it does not establish the manuscript’s fictional contents as historical fact.
Is the Book of Soyga real?
Yes. The Book of Soyga is a real manuscript, distinct from Ashmole 782. Harkness told the Folger Shakespeare Library that she encountered Soyga at the Bodleian in 1994 while researching John Dee, and that it helped inspire the novel’s lost-book premise. What historical research inspired A Discovery of Witches?
Harkness is a historian of science whose work includes the history of books and readers, alchemy and magic, and scientific practice in Elizabethan London. Her scholarly books include John Dee’s Conversations with Angels: Cabala, Alchemy, and the End of Nature (Cambridge University Press, 1999) and The Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution (Yale University Press, 2007). Her background helps explain why the novel’s supernatural world is woven into learned inquiry, books, household practices and natural philosophy rather than set apart in a wholly separate fantasy realm. Harkness’s official bibliography lists her work.
In a publisher reader guide, Harkness describes reimagining the modern world through medieval and Renaissance perspectives. She says that people in those periods could understand magical beings as present in the world they inhabited, not confined to another realm. This is her account of the imaginative lens she uses, not evidence that people across those centuries or communities shared one uniform worldview. Beliefs varied, and the novel’s historical texture should not be mistaken for a single consensus about magic.

Harkness frames her interest around how people have sought answers through science, faith and magic. She also discusses older cosmologies in which change and creation could be understood through combinations of opposing elements and celestial or terrestrial influences. These ideas help establish the novel’s historical imagination; they are not contemporary scientific explanations. In her words, “I definitely see my historical work as a process of detection,” while “Fiction is more like alchemy, though.” The publisher’s reader guide gives her description of this approach.
Is the alchemy in A Discovery of Witches historically accurate?
It is historically informed, but the recipe passages are not presented as transcriptions from one identifiable historical source. Harkness told the Folger that they were “stuck together from a whole lot of different alchemical texts,” adding, “It’s not one text, it’s sort of all of them.” The result is literary worldbuilding built from a range of textual influences, not a single authentic recipe book recreated on the page. That approach fits the mixed character of historical books Harkness describes. Grimoires and other compilations could bring together prayers, instructions for conjuring spirits and practical remedies such as a treatment for toothache. A manuscript’s contents did not necessarily fall into modern categories of religion, entertainment, craft or science. The novel uses that eclectic textual culture to make its magical learning feel embedded in ordinary intellectual and domestic life.
What can medieval magic recipes tell us?
A recent scholarly article offers a narrow comparison: it examines manuscript recipes for making small objects appear to move. Some rely on sleight of hand or inserted creatures; others involve mercury and other substances. The article notes that some procedures reflect misunderstandings of chemical processes or may not work as intended. Such examples show how craft, performance, play and ideas called magical could meet in recipe collections, but they do not verify any particular spell or alchemical scene in the novel.
