A Man on the Inside is a scripted Netflix comedy about a retired man who takes undercover investigative assignments. Its first case sends Charles Nieuwendyk into a San Francisco retirement community to investigate a theft; the second takes him to a college. The series is fictional, but its premise was inspired by the documentary The Mole Agent. Netflix reported that the show’s third and final season began production in September 2026, without announcing a release date.
What is A Man on the Inside about?
Created by Mike Schur, the series stars Ted Danson as Charles Nieuwendyk, a retiree looking for a new sense of purpose. He answers an advertisement from a private investigator and goes undercover to help solve a theft at Pacific View, a senior living community in San Francisco. Netflix describes the first season as eight episodes.

Is A Man on the Inside based on a true story?

What happens in season 2?
In season 2, Charles goes undercover at Wheeler College in a blackmail case involving the college president and a potential major donation. Netflix announced that the season was streaming on November 21, 2025. Its article also says season 1 spent five weeks in Netflix’s Most Popular English TV Top 10; that is a platform ranking duration, not an audience total.
The returning ensemble includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Season 2 adds Mary Steenburgen, Gary Cole, Max Greenfield, David Strathairn, Jason Mantzoukas, and Constance Marie. Details are in Netflix Tudum’s season 2 report.

Is A Man on the Inside coming back for season 3?
Yes. Netflix reported on September 25, 2026, that season 3 had begun production in San Francisco and called it the series’ third and final season. That is a production update, not a premiere announcement: Netflix’s report does not give a release date or release window. Its season 3 update is the source for the latest status described here.

The series’ executive producers include Schur, Morgan Sackett, David Miner, Maite Alberdi, Marcela Santibáñez, Julie Goldman, and Christopher Clements.
