They were mixed. The strongest “surprise” came from one named critic, William Mullally of The National, who wrote: “I actually liked A Minecraft Movie. I’m as surprised as you are.” Other early reviewers praised the performances, color and humor, while faulting the story for being conventional and short on originality.
Those first reactions were published ahead of the film’s North American theatrical opening on April 4, 2025. They should not be read as a measure of what every early viewer thought.

What is A Minecraft Movie about?
The 2025 film is a live-action adaptation of the video game, directed by Jared Hess and presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. Jack Black plays Steve, alongside Jason Momoa as Garrett Garrison. Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge are also in the cast.
In the official synopsis, four people are pulled through a portal into the Overworld. They join Steve on a quest and face threats including Piglins and Zombies. The film opened internationally beginning April 2, 2025, followed by its North American theatrical release on April 4. The official movie site lists the film’s cast, credits and formats.

What did the first reviews praise—and criticize?
Rotten Tomatoes’ pre-release roundup collected sharply different responses rather than a single verdict. Positive comments focused on the cast’s performances, the film’s bright, colorful adaptation and its humor. Some critics also saw appeal for younger viewers.
The reservations centered on the story: reviewers described it as conventional or underdeveloped, and some found it less imaginative than the game that inspired it. That divide matters for viewers deciding what to expect: the early praise was more about the film’s energy and performers than a claim that it reinvented the source material.

Why were some early viewers surprised?
The headline’s surprise is best understood through Mullally’s own first-person reaction, quoted in Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup: “I actually liked A Minecraft Movie. I’m as surprised as you are.” It is evidence that this critic expected less and enjoyed the result—not proof that early viewers as a whole were surprised.
The roundup does not establish a statistic for how many people felt that way. Its evidence is a collection of named critical reactions, including both praise and meaningful criticism.

How did opening-period audiences respond compared with critics?
At the film’s April 2025 opening, surveyed moviegoers responded more positively than the mixed critical reception suggested. The Associated Press reported a B+ CinemaScore and 4/5 stars in PostTrak exit polls. Those are opening-period audience measures, not a survey of every person who watched the film.
The AP’s April 6, 2025 report also put estimated opening-weekend ticket sales at $157 million in the United States and Canada and $301 million globally. It reported that around 62% of the opening audience were men and 64% were under age 25. These are historical estimates and audience figures reported at the time, not current box-office totals or a measure of all viewers. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-chair and CEO Pamela Abdy told the AP, “We’re just thrilled that audiences are responding and that everyone’s going to the theater.”

Where can you watch or buy the film?
The official movie site lists digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and a limited-edition SteelBook. For streaming and transactional options, availability varies by location and can change: Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing displayed Max streaming and Fandango rental or purchase options when accessed on October 4, 2026.
That listing also showed a 47% Tomatometer from 195 reviews and an 84% Popcornmeter from 10,000+ verified ratings on that date. Rotten Tomatoes’ scores are changing aggregates, so these figures are a dated snapshot rather than a permanent rating.
