The trial of seven is about to begin when the episode ends; the fight and its consequences are left for the next episode.
Egg’s identity changes Dunk’s predicament
Dunk is locked in a cell after attacking Prince Aerion, who had injured the puppeteer Tanselle. When Egg visits dressed as a Targaryen, he reveals that he is Aegon Targaryen. Egg had been expected to serve as squire to his brother Daeron, but Daeron did not want to enter the tournament. The revelation strains Egg and Dunk’s relationship, though Egg continues to stand by him.
A trial by seven raises the stakes
Baelor tells Dunk that Daeron has accused him of kidnapping Egg. Dunk asks for trial by combat, but Aerion demands the seldom-used trial of seven. Each side must provide seven fighters, giving Dunk until dawn to find six knights to join him.
In the world of the episode, the trial is treated as a religious judgment: the combatants fight, and the gods are believed to determine whose cause is just. That is the characters’ belief about the trial, not a guarantee of an objectively knowable verdict.

Dunk recruits a team, then loses Steffon
Steffon Fossoway volunteers first, promising Dunk, “You shan’t die under my watch, ser, I promise you that.” With Egg’s help, Dunk also recruits Ser Lyonel Baratheon, Ser Robyn Rhysling and Ser Humfrey Hardyng. Ser Humfrey Beesbury joins as well.
Daeron privately tells Dunk about a dream in which a fire and a dead dragon fall on him, yet he survives. The image hangs over the gathering without being explained or resolved in this episode.

Then Steffon changes sides after Aerion promises him a lordship. Dunk’s group needs a replacement. Raymun asks Dunk to knight him so he can take his cousin’s place, leaving the seven fighters ready as dawn approaches.

As the trial is about to begin, Dunk appeals to the crowd: “Who will stand and fight with me?” Baelor, heir to the Iron Throne, rides forward and declares, “I will take Ser Duncan’s side!” His choice makes him the episode’s surprising Targaryen hero: he judges that Dunk defended an innocent person, despite the family conflict.
