Martin told him that Ser Lyonel Baratheon “comes back later on down the line.” That is a tease about the character’s possible place in the wider story—not confirmation that Ings will appear in season two, or that a new Lyonel story has been published.
What did Martin tell Daniel Ings?
In a February 22, 2026 interview, Ings recounted that Martin visited the set of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and told him: “You know, your character comes back later on down the line.” The comment is Martin’s reported on-set remark as relayed by Ings, rather than a public announcement from Martin about a future adaptation or casting decision. Read Ings’s account.
Ings also made clear that the idea remains uncertain: “I have to wait and see if the story catches up to it, and if that story ever gets told, I’d be pumped.” His wording leaves open whether the later story will be written, adapted, or brought to the screen.
Does this confirm Lyonel Baratheon for season two?
No. Asked whether he was part of season two, Ings declined to confirm his involvement. He also noted that Lyonel is “not in the second book or the third book.” His comment about Martin’s tease does not establish a season-two appearance, a production plan, or a confirmed return for Ings.

Why the tease is notable
The show gives Lyonel room to stand out
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Showrunner Ira Parker has discussed how the series expands on Dunk’s life and how the show shaped Lyonel for television. That broader characterization gives the character a substantial presence on screen, but it does not itself confirm a later story. Parker’s interview with The A.V. Club.
Ings’s take on the Laughing Storm
Ings plays Ser Lyonel Baratheon, known as the Laughing Storm. He describes Lyonel as a party-loving observer who recognizes the political instability of a ruling dynasty in decline. Ings links the character’s anti-Targaryen feeling to the dynasty’s power and weakening grip, which he believes could lead to violence and chaos. That is Ings’s interpretation of Lyonel, not a definitive explanation attributed to Martin. Ings’s interview with Den of Geek.
