That is a practical guide to the central story and current film materials—not a census of every girl in the wider franchise, which also includes spin-off manga and game stories.
The first five are the central cast of the original TV story. Nagisa joins the film continuity in Rebellion; Shichouka, Selma, and the unnamed upperclassman appear in official materials for Walpurgisnacht Rising. Profiles below begin with low-spoiler recognition cues. Major plot developments are separated into a clearly marked section.
Who are the five central magical girls in the original story?
The official TV Edition character profiles introduce the original cast through their school lives and relationships. These cues identify each girl without giving away the story’s major turns.
| Character | Where she enters the story | Official introductory cue | Connection to Madoka |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madoka Kaname | Original TV story | A kind, ordinary second-year middle-school student; the central point of entry into the story. | The story follows her choices and relationships with the other girls. |
| Homura Akemi | Original TV story, as a transfer student | Cool and capable, but mysterious in her behavior. | Her relationship with Madoka becomes central to the film continuity. |
| Mami Tomoe | Original TV story | An experienced third-year student and a dependable older-sister figure. | She acts as a mentor to Madoka and Sayaka. |
| Sayaka Miki | Original TV story | Madoka’s energetic classmate and close friend. | Her friendship with Madoka is part of the original group’s emotional center. |
| Kyoko Sakura | Original TV story; she comes from another town | A strong-willed magical girl who initially competes for territory. | She enters as a rival and later becomes concerned for Sayaka. |
These concise character cues come from the official TV Edition character page. They are introductory descriptions, not complete accounts of each girl’s role across the series and films.

Which girls join the film story?
Nagisa Momoe
Nagisa is included in the official Rebellion character roster. She first appears in the film in Bebe’s form alongside Mami. The official film page identifies her as a messenger of the Law of Cycles who has returned to the present. This role places her beyond the original five without making her a member of the TV story’s initial group.
Shichouka (紫丁香)
Shichouka is one of two new magical girls announced for Walpurgisnacht Rising. The official profile says she was once guided by the Law of Cycles, returned to the present through Nazukazokotsune, and wants to recover the Law of Cycles.
Selma Therese
Selma is the second newly announced girl. Her official profile says she, too, was once guided by the Law of Cycles and returned to the present. It describes her as lively and eager to help, and says she becomes friendly with Nagisa.
Rank #2
The unnamed upperclassman, labeled “Wasu”
The current film character page labels this figure “the unnamed upperclassman / Wasu,” but says her name and identity are unknown and known only through rumor. Treat “Wasu” as the page’s label, not as a confirmed personal name. The profile also notes her resemblance to Homura.
The official Walpurgisnacht Rising character page profiles returning and new characters. The film is described on its official site as a direct continuation of Rebellion. Its announced character roster is a snapshot of available film materials, not a guarantee that no further characters will be revealed.
Major spoilers: how the central roles develop
Warning: the following section reveals major developments from the series and films.
Rank #3
Madoka and Homura
Later film materials describe Madoka as having become a godlike existence after wishing to save all magical girls. Following Homura’s intervention, Madoka lives as an ordinary student in an altered world. Homura’s profile describes her time-reversal ability and her transformation into a devil after she changes the world out of love for Madoka.
Sayaka, Mami, and Kyoko
The official sequel profiles connect Sayaka’s contract to her wish to heal Kyosuke’s injury and describe her later fate and role in Rebellion. Mami’s profile notes that she creates weapons from ribbons and uses the attack “Tiro Finale.” Kyoko’s fuller film profile gives context for her concern for Sayaka. These are substantial story details; viewers who have not finished the series and films may prefer to stop at the spoiler-free profiles above.
Does this list include every magical girl in Madoka Magica?
No—not if “Madoka Magica” means the entire franchise. The nine profiles here cover the original central group, a girl in Rebellion, and characters currently profiled for Walpurgisnacht Rising. Spin-off manga and game stories have their own casts, and the official pages cited here do not provide a consolidated all-media index. This guide therefore does not claim a franchise-wide total.
Kyubey is not part of the girls’ roster. The official TV character page identifies Kyubey separately as a magical messenger that grants one wish. That distinction matters: Kyubey is central to how the girls enter the story, but is not a magical girl.

The official Walpurgisnacht Rising site lists a printed program with 56 pages of character settings, staff and cast interviews, and design material. Territory and availability can vary, so check the official listing and local sellers for current details. The official franchise portal also lists character goods and licensed collaborations, while Aniplex of America identifies TV-series Blu-ray and DVD releases; neither source establishes current retailer stock or a particular edition’s availability.

- Aniplex of America: Madoka Magica releases
Madoka’s official character page includes her line, “If you were told you could make any wish come true with magic, what would you do?” The page credits Aoi Yuki as Madoka’s voice actor; the line is dialogue from the character, not a statement by the actor.
