Sajjad Hussain (1917–1995) was a Hindi film composer and virtuoso mandolin player whose music joined Hindustani and Middle Eastern influences. He entered Bombay’s film world as an instrumentalist and assistant, made his independent composing debut with Dost (1944), and later scored landmarks including Sangdil and Rustam Sohrab. His career also reached Sinhala cinema, while his final film score came with Aakhri Sajda (1977).
From Sitamau to Bombay’s film studios
Sajjad Hussain was born on 15 June 1917 in Sitamau, in present-day Madhya Pradesh, and died in Mumbai on 21 July 1995. Cinemaazi records these dates and places; HindiGeet independently confirms the dates and Sitamau origin.
His musical training began with his father, Mohammed Amir Khan, who taught him sitar. Hussain later learned veena, violin, flute and piano. He became especially identified with the mandolin: Cinemaazi describes him as an accomplished player who could render Indian classical music on the instrument.
He moved to Bombay in 1937, working as an assistant composer and contract instrumentalist. While assisting Hanuman Prasad, he composed two songs for Gaali (1944). His independent debut as a music director followed that same year with Dost.

Listening to Sajjad Hussain’s film music
Cinemaazi characterizes his scores as complex and describes his approach as bringing Hindustani and Middle Eastern traditions together. That description offers a useful frame for listening, but the songs themselves are the best way to encounter the range of his work: follow the melodies, the singers’ interpretations and the mandolin’s place in the musical texture.
Dost (1944): Noor Jehan’s performances
Cinemaazi lists three Noor Jehan songs from Dost: “Koi prem ka deke sandesa,” “Alam par alam aur sitam par sitam,” and “Badnaam mohabbat kaun kare.” The archive recounts that the producer credited Noor Jehan with the songs’ success and that Hussain did not work with her again. That is Cinemaazi’s account of the episode, rather than a separately corroborated explanation of their subsequent careers.

Sangdil (1952): a central Hindi-film landmark
Sangdil is one of the major Hindi films associated with Hussain’s composing career. It provides a useful point of entry for listeners tracing his work beyond his debut and later celebrated score for Rustam Sohrab.
Rustam Sohrab (1963): three vocal perspectives
Cinemaazi identifies several songs from this score as listening anchors: Suraiya sings “Ye kaisi ajab dastan ho gayi hai,” Lata Mangeshkar sings “Ae dilruba,” and Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey and Sadat Khan perform “Phir tumhari yaad aayi ae sanam.” Hearing the songs side by side brings different vocal colors into focus within the same film score.

Mandolin performances beyond the Hindi songs
Hussain’s identity as a player extended beyond his work as a composer. Cinemaazi reports that he played the title track of Do Behnen (1959), and performed a five-minute solo piece for the Telugu film Muthyala Muggu (1975). These credits point to an instrumental career that cannot be reduced to the songs for which he is most often remembered.
A composer working across languages
Hussain also scored Daiwa Yogaya (1959), a Sinhala film from Sri Lanka. Cinemaazi describes its songs as a landmark in his career and names Rukmani Devi as the singer of “Hada gile ama mihire” and “Doi doiya putha.” The film broadens the picture of his work beyond Hindi cinema: his composing career crossed language and national film industries.

A relatively small filmography, a lasting reputation
Cinemaazi reports that Hussain received fewer than 20 Hindi film music assignments, despite being highly regarded by contemporaries, and says Lata Mangeshkar considered him a favourite composer. The assignment count is the archive’s reported figure, not a reconciled count from a complete filmography. A limited number of film credits, therefore, should not be mistaken for limited musical ambition or skill.
Cinemaazi identifies Aakhri Sajda (1977) as his final film as composer. He continued to appear in concerts into the 1980s, according to the archive. His path from film-studio instrumentalist to composer and concert performer helps explain why his legacy rests both on recorded songs and on his command of the mandolin.
