Princess Diana and Prince Charles met again in November 1977, married in 1981, announced their separation in 1992 and divorced in 1996. Their public milestones are well documented; accounts of private events should be treated as attributed reporting, not as settled fact.
1977: Diana and Charles meet again at Althorp
The Royal Family’s biography of Diana, Princess of Wales says the Spencer and royal families were neighbors at Sandringham until 1975 and had known each other for years. It dates Diana and Charles’s renewed meeting to November 1977, when Charles was invited to Althorp, the Spencer family home. A later account says Charles was dating Diana’s older sister, Lady Sarah Spencer, at the time; that detail comes from secondary reporting rather than the official biography.

1981: Engagement and wedding
24 February: The engagement is announced
The engagement of Lady Diana Spencer and the Prince of Wales was officially announced on 24 February 1981. The Independent recounts that, when asked whether they were in love, Charles replied, “whatever ‘in love’ means.” That reported exchange captures a public moment; it does not establish either person’s private feelings.
29 July: They marry at St Paul’s Cathedral
Diana and Charles married at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 29 July 1981. Historic Royal Palaces’ account, “A history of royal weddings”, says more than 80 broadcasting organisations from 50 countries took live pictures from the BBC. This describes broadcast participation, not the number of viewers. CBS News estimated that almost a billion people watched on television; that is CBS’s estimate, not a precise independently verified count.

1981–1984: Public tours and the birth of their sons
October 1981: Their first joint tour
The Royal Family biography identifies a three-day visit to Wales in October 1981 as Diana’s first tour with Charles. Their final joint overseas visit was to South Korea in 1992.

21 June 1982: Prince William is born

15 September 1984: Prince Harry is born
Their second son, Henry—widely known as Harry—was born on 15 September 1984. The Royal Family biography and the Associated Press’s Charles timeline record the births and the main family milestones.

1992: Separation is announced
The couple’s agreement to separate was announced in December 1992. The Associated Press dates the announcement to 9 December. The Palace statement, read by Prime Minister John Major and reproduced by The Independent, said: “This decision has been reached amicably and they will both continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children.” The announcement concerned their separation, not a divorce; they remained married until 1996.
1995: Diana speaks publicly about the marriage
In a November 1995 television interview, Diana discussed unhappiness in her personal life and the pressures of public life, according to the Royal Family biography. Biography.com reports her remark about the marriage: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” The line became closely associated with the interview, but it is quoted here as reported by Biography.com rather than presented as a full account of the marriage or its private history.

1996: Divorce and arrangements after the marriage
The divorce was finalized on 28 August 1996. Diana continued to be known as Diana, Princess of Wales, but no longer used the style “Her Royal Highness.” The Royal Family biography says Diana and Charles both retained equal responsibility for their children’s upbringing after the divorce.
