A Family Affair (2024) is a Netflix romantic comedy about Zara Ford, a young personal assistant who discovers that her demanding movie-star boss, Chris Cole, is dating her mother, Brooke Harwood. The premise creates an unusual collision between workplace resentment, family embarrassment, celebrity culture, and a romance between two adults at different stages of life.
Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King lead the cast. Directed by Richard LaGravenese and written by Carrie Solomon, the film is easy to watch as a celebrity rom-com, but its more interesting idea is that Zara, Brooke, and Chris are all confronting different versions of adulthood and personal reinvention.

What is A Family Affair about?
Zara Ford works as the personal assistant to Chris Cole, a successful but conceited movie star. Chris is the kind of employer who makes his assistant’s job far more demanding than it needs to be, while Zara carries much of the invisible work required to maintain his celebrity lifestyle.

The situation changes when Chris becomes romantically involved with Zara’s mother, Brooke Harwood. Brooke is a successful writer, and her relationship with Chris forces Zara to see her difficult employer in a completely different context. The professional relationship she already resents now overlaps with the most private part of her family life.
As Netflix’s companion coverage explains, Zara discovers her former boss in an intimate situation with Brooke. That discovery supplies the film’s central embarrassment and drives the mother-daughter conflict without requiring the story to depend on a conventional love triangle.
The central question is not simply whether Chris and Brooke can fall in love. It is whether Zara can accept that her mother has desires, ambitions, and a life separate from the role of “mother”—and whether Brooke can allow herself to enter a new phase of life without treating her daughter’s discomfort as a veto.
Cast and characters
Nicole Kidman as Brooke Harwood
Brooke is a successful writer and Zara’s mother. Her romance with Chris places her in the unusual position of dating the person who employs her daughter. The character also gives the film its clearest second-adulthood perspective: Brooke has spent years being understood through family and professional responsibilities, and the relationship challenges her to consider what she wants for herself.
Zac Efron as Chris Cole
Chris is a demanding movie star whose fame has made him self-absorbed. He stars in the fictional Icarus Rush blockbuster franchise and initially appears to represent the most exaggerated version of celebrity entitlement. His relationship with Brooke asks the audience to look past that public persona and decide whether his apparent shallowness is the whole story.
Joey King as Zara Ford
Zara is Chris’s overworked assistant and Brooke’s daughter. She is the character caught between the film’s two worlds: the exhausting machinery of Hollywood celebrity and the uncomfortable reality of her mother’s romantic life. Her anger is partly personal, but it is also professional. Chris has treated her as an easily replaceable employee, and now he expects her to process his relationship with her mother as if it were merely another scheduling problem.
Kathy Bates as Leila Ford
Kathy Bates plays Leila Ford, Zara’s grandmother and Brooke’s mother. Leila adds another generational perspective to the family’s arguments about independence, intimacy, and what adults are allowed to want.

Kidman and Efron had previously appeared together in The Paperboy. Their reunion is one reason the pairing attracts attention, although A Family Affair uses them in a substantially lighter romantic-comedy setting.
A coming-of-age story for three adults
Director Richard LaGravenese has described the film as a coming-of-age story for three people at different stages of life. That framing is more revealing than the film’s basic “movie star dates assistant’s mother” hook.
- Zara is trying to establish an adult identity beyond being useful to other people. Her job has made her responsible, but responsibility has not necessarily given her independence.
- Brooke is entering what the filmmakers describe as a “second adulthood,” a period in which she can reconsider choices made around family expectations and long-established roles.
- Chris has achieved professional success but has not obviously developed the emotional maturity that should accompany it. His romantic relationship becomes a test of whether he can behave like a partner rather than a star surrounded by employees.
This three-way structure gives the film more to discuss than its celebrity fantasy. Brooke is not merely “the older woman” in a celebrity romance, Zara is not merely an obstructive daughter, and Chris is not merely a famous man who learns a lesson. Each character is being asked to revise a familiar identity.
Hollywood workplace comedy and invisible labor
The opening setup also works as a workplace comedy. Chris’s fame does not just make him attractive or glamorous; it creates an unequal labor arrangement in which Zara is expected to anticipate his needs, absorb his moods, and protect the machinery around him.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat makes the romance especially awkward. Zara is not encountering Chris as a mysterious stranger. She knows him as the employer who creates chaos and expects her to fix it. When he begins dating Brooke, the boundary between Zara’s job and her family becomes impossible to maintain.
The film’s strongest comic possibility lies in that conflict: a personal assistant who cannot escape her boss even at home, and a mother who has chosen the one man her daughter most wants to avoid discussing. The Hollywood setting also allows the movie to poke at the performance of celebrity—the difference between Chris’s public image, his professional behavior, and the person Brooke believes she sees in private.

Does the romance work?
The answer depends largely on what a viewer wants from the film. The Kidman-Efron pairing gives the story immediate appeal, and the premise is strong enough to generate comic tension before the romance is fully developed. There is also an appealing reversal in making Brooke, rather than Zara, the person who becomes involved with the famous man.
However, several critics found the film less consistent than its setup. The Guardian’s review argued that the initial tension is resolved too quickly, reducing some of the irony and comic pressure built into the premise. RogerEbert.com described it as a low-intensity romantic comedy whose early scenes effectively establish Chris’s celebrity status and Zara’s demanding job.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Another recurring critical concern was the shift between tones. The film moves among show-business satire, family drama, sexual embarrassment, and earnest romance. The Hollywood Reporter review, collected through IMDb’s critic-review page, is part of the broader reception pattern that sees the film divided between those modes.
That tonal split is not necessarily a problem for every viewer. Someone looking for a relaxed Netflix romance may appreciate the mixture of family awkwardness and celebrity fantasy. Someone expecting a sharper satire of Hollywood or a more deeply developed age-gap romance may find that the screenplay moves too quickly between its ideas.
Critical response versus Netflix audience interest
A Family Affair received mixed critical notices, but its Netflix performance shows that it attracted substantial early audience attention. Netflix reported that the film was the most-watched title on its English-language film list for the week of June 24, 2024—the week containing its June 28 debut. Netflix later reported 11.6 million views for the week of July 8, when the movie ranked second on the English-language film list.
Those figures are Netflix’s global weekly viewing measurements, not theatrical box-office results. The film was released as a Netflix title, so describing it as a streaming success is more accurate than calling it a box-office hit. The contrast is useful: critics questioned the screenplay’s tonal cohesion, while the cast, premise, and accessibility clearly gave the film strong streaming appeal.

In other words, the movie’s popularity does not settle the artistic debate. It does show that the central hook—an assistant discovering that her movie-star boss is dating her mother—was strong enough to bring a large audience to the film.

Watch it if you want:
- a light Netflix romantic comedy built around an unusual family complication;
- Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron in a romance-focused pairing;
- a workplace-comedy angle involving celebrity entitlement and assistant labor;
- a story about a mother reclaiming a personal life and a daughter adjusting to that change;
- a relatively easy, star-driven watch rather than a demanding relationship drama.
Adjust your expectations if you want:
- a consistently sharp Hollywood satire;
- a highly detailed examination of the age difference between Brooke and Chris;
- a romance that develops with more gradual psychological depth;
- a comedy that maintains one tone from beginning to end.
The film’s most compelling material is its starting contradiction: Zara’s employer is also her mother’s new partner. Its limitations come from how quickly it moves beyond that contradiction and how often it changes between comedy, romance, and family drama. The result is a watchable, accessible Netflix movie whose cast and premise are more memorable than its critical consensus.
Spoiler-free verdict
A Family Affair is best understood as a star-led romantic comedy with a promising family-and-workplace premise, not as a documentary or a hard-edged Hollywood satire. Kidman, Efron, and King make the central relationships easy to follow, while the three-stage coming-of-age idea gives the movie a more thoughtful foundation than its broad title suggests.

Whether it works for you will depend on your tolerance for tonal shifts and familiar rom-com plotting. The film is strongest when it explores the embarrassment of seeing a parent as a fully independent adult—and the resentment of discovering that the person who employs you has entered your family. It is less persuasive when it tries to resolve those tensions too neatly.
