What was the original ACOTAR adaptation?
In March 2021, Hulu and 20th Television announced a television adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Ronald D. Moore, whose credits include Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, was attached to develop the project with Maas.

The planned series was based on the fantasy-romance world of Prythian. The first novel follows Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old huntress who kills a wolf and is taken from the human lands into the faerie realm. There, she becomes involved with Tamlin, the Spring Court, and a threat affecting the faerie courts.
The announcement described the project as a television series combining fantasy, romance, adventure, and political intrigue. It was not announced as a movie, animated production, anthology, or limited series. Hulu did not publicly confirm an episode count, budget, season order, cast, filming schedule, or premiere date.

Is the ACOTAR show canceled?
The Hulu adaptation is canceled. Hulu and 20th Television are no longer moving forward with the version announced in 2021. That does not mean the wider A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation is permanently impossible.
Maas’s March 2026 comments indicate that she has regained control of the rights and wants to be deeply involved in any future screen version. May reporting about her interest in finding another studio provides a possible path forward, but it is still reporting about a potential development—not a formal announcement of a new series.

Reporting has discussed the effects of the 2023 Hollywood strikes and broader pressure on streaming budgets as possible factors. Those should be treated as reported or inferred contributors, not as an official Hulu statement. The clearest documented creative issue concerns Maas’s desired level of involvement.

Maas has described the adaptation as a major creative project rather than a simple licensing arrangement. Coverage of her comments indicates that she wants to participate in the writing, design, music, and overall presentation of the screen version.
She has also objected to changing the story merely to target a different demographic. Her stated concern is that an adaptation should reflect the identity of the books, her creative vision, and what she believes fans expect from Prythian.
That level of involvement could help protect the tone and character relationships that readers consider central to the series. It could also make development slower or more complicated, particularly if a future buyer wants broad freedom to restructure the material. At present, there is no public evidence of a new script, showrunner, director, or studio partnership.

The story expands considerably beyond Feyre’s initial arrival in Prythian. It introduces multiple courts, shifting alliances, political conflicts, different romantic relationships, and viewpoints beyond the first book’s central perspective.
That breadth makes a television format a more natural inference than a single feature film. However, the original Hulu television plan is over, and no future buyer has announced whether a revival would be a series, a film, or another format. Maas has spoken generally about possible television or movie adaptations, but no official format decision exists.

When are the next ACOTAR books coming out?
The literary series is continuing while the screen project remains uncertain. Bloomsbury lists A Court of Thorns and Roses 6 for October 27, 2026, and A Court of Thorns and Roses 7 for January 12, 2027. Maas has described the new material as a large, multi-part story. A further book has been discussed in current coverage, but it does not yet have a confirmed release date.
Maas has also made clear that completing the books is her immediate priority. That is important context for adaptation watchers: even if she begins exploring studios, the development of a new screen version may take place while the literary series is still expanding. There is no reliable basis for predicting a premiere in 2028, 2029, or any other year.
Fans who want to follow the publishing side separately can look for the ACOTAR 6 hardback pre-order, which Bloomsbury lists for October 27, 2026. It is an upcoming novel, not adaptation merchandise or evidence that filming has begun.
Has the ACOTAR cast been announced?
No official cast has been announced. The Hulu-era project never reached a public casting or production stage. There are no confirmed actors for Feyre, Tamlin, Rhysand, Nesta, Cassian, or any other character in a future adaptation.
Fan-casting is especially common around this series, including speculation involving performers associated with Outlander and other fantasy productions. Those discussions are not evidence of an attachment. Sam Heughan, for example, should not be described as cast simply because fans have connected him with the project.
Margot Robbie is also not confirmed to be producing, starring in, or otherwise attached to ACOTAR. Public enthusiasm for the books is fan interest, not a studio announcement.

Does ACOTAR have a release date?
No. There is no official premiere date, filming date, production location, episode count, season order, or replacement streaming home.
The former Hulu project never reached publicly announced casting or filming. The possible future version has no confirmed buyer. Any specific release year currently circulating should be labeled speculation and should not be presented as a forecast.
What would confirm that a new adaptation is really moving?
Readers should look for several concrete milestones before treating a revival as active:
- A rights or development announcement: Maas, a studio, or a distributor formally identifies the new partner.
- A named creative team: A showrunner, writer, director, or production company is attached in an official announcement.
- A cast announcement: Actors are confirmed by the studio or by a reputable trade report that identifies the production.

- A distribution plan: A network or streamer announces where and when the finished project will be released.
Until those steps occur, phrases such as “in development,” “being shopped,” or “reportedly looking for a studio” should not be upgraded to “coming soon.”
Official ACOTAR merchandise and collector options
The books are the most directly relevant purchase for adaptation readers, but official licensed products also exist. IMG Licensing identifies ACOTAR product categories including apparel, home décor, toys and games, collectibles, cosplay, and immersive experiences. Its materials have referenced collaborations involving Popsockets, Monopoly, Alex and Ani, BlackMilk, Youtooz, and Con*Quest Journals.
For a smaller purchase, an ACOTAR coloring book is a directly related companion product. An ACOTAR jewelry collection from Alex and Ani offers a gift-oriented option. Availability depends on region, retailer, and current licensing arrangements, so shoppers should verify that a product is officially licensed and currently available before purchasing.
None of these products is an adaptation tie-in. Since no new screen production has been announced, there is no official cast merchandise, premiere merchandise, or show-specific release collection to recommend.
The practical answer for ACOTAR fans
If you are waiting for the show, there is nothing new to watch or pre-order from a screen-production standpoint. The Hulu project is over. Maas says the rights are back with her, and she appears interested in controlling any future version, but a replacement studio has not been named.

- Adaptation news: Watch for an official buyer, creative team, cast, or production announcement.
