Yes—but not through every television or voice remote. A reported 2025 incident in London, Ontario, involved a nine-year-old who used a Rogers TV box’s voice remote to complete a multi-step Netflix signup. The subscription was billed through the family’s Rogers account and reportedly went unnoticed for months. The practical lesson is to check whether your TV provider allows third-party subscriptions, enable its purchase controls, and inspect your recurring charges.
This is a Rogers-specific reported case, not proof that every smart TV or voice assistant can sign a child up for Netflix with one command.
What happened
According to MobileSyrup’s report, a parent noticed an extra Netflix charge on a March 2025 Rogers statement. The charge had reportedly been recurring since July 2024. The family traced the activity to a nine-year-old using the voice function on a Rogers TV-box remote and a school email address.

Why the charge appeared on the Rogers bill
Rogers supports Netflix activation through compatible TV boxes. Its documented flow involves opening Netflix, selecting Join Now, and following the account-creation prompts. When Netflix is activated through Rogers, the subscription can be billed through the Rogers account rather than directly to a credit card.
Rogers says Netflix billing is available, subject to product and account availability, across services including Rogers Xfinity TV, Rogers Streaming, Rogers App TV, StreamSaver and some Rogers Mobile arrangements. Product names and menus can vary between current and legacy equipment.
That makes this primarily a provider-integrated billing and account-control issue. It is not accurate to say that Netflix automatically signs up children or that every voice remote can independently purchase a subscription.
Which households should check first?
- Homes with Rogers Xfinity TV, Rogers Streaming, Rogers App TV or another Rogers service supporting Netflix billing.
- Homes using a Rogers Xfinity Voice Remote.
- TV boxes located where children can use them unsupervised.
- Accounts with no purchase PIN or with parental controls still disabled.
- Households that rarely review individual bill line items.
Rogers says parental controls are off by default. A child-accessible box is therefore worth checking even if the family already has Netflix or receives billing emails.

How to lock down Rogers TV
Set a Parental Control PIN
- Press the Rogers button on the voice remote.
- Select Settings using the gear icon.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Select Parental Control PIN.
- Enter and confirm a four-digit PIN.
Rogers says controls are configured separately for each digital box. Repeat the process on every box in the home. Do not share the PIN with children.
Set a Purchase PIN
- Press the Rogers button.
- Open Settings.
- Select Purchase PIN.
- Turn the Purchase PIN feature on.
- Enter and confirm a four-digit PIN.
Rogers’ documentation specifically describes the Purchase PIN as protection for Rogers TV transactions such as On Demand and Pay Per View. It does not clearly establish that the same PIN blocks every Netflix activation flow.
Verify rather than assume: open Netflix, begin the activation or Join Now flow, and check whether a PIN is required before a subscription can be added. Do not complete the signup. If no PIN is requested, ask Rogers whether third-party streaming subscriptions can be blocked separately from rentals and pay-per-view purchases.

Check whether a subscription already exists
Audit Rogers
- Review the current bill and previous 12 months of statements.
- Search for Netflix, streaming, subscription or third-party-service line items.
- Check the subscriptions area of MyRogers.
- Review billing emails, including spam and secondary inboxes.
- Check every Rogers TV box if you have more than one.
Audit Netflix and household email
- Search for Netflix welcome, activation, password-reset or billing messages.
- Check email addresses a child could access, including school or older family accounts.
- Use Netflix’s account-recovery process only for accounts the parent or bill-payer controls.
- Distinguish an unfamiliar profile from an unfamiliar account: a new profile does not necessarily mean a new paid subscription.
How to cancel an unwanted Rogers-billed Netflix account
Rogers’ current instructions say to cancel through Netflix first:
- Open Netflix.
- Open the account menu and select Account.
- Select Cancel Membership.
- Select Finish Cancellation.
Some customers can also use MyRogers → Manage subscriptions → Netflix → Unsubscribe. Menu labels vary by product. Save confirmation emails and screenshots, check that Netflix shows the cancellation status, and confirm that the next Rogers bill no longer includes the charge. If billing continues, contact Rogers and ask about the disputed charges and any available credit; do not assume a refund is guaranteed.
Rogers says cancelling the Netflix subscription is required to remove Netflix from the Rogers bill, and the change appears on a subsequent bill. See its activation and cancellation instructions.
If you already had Netflix
Existing subscribers face a separate risk: duplicate billing or account confusion. Rogers says linking an existing Netflix account can preserve profiles, watch history and preferences and help avoid double billing. It also warns that customers switching to Rogers-billed Netflix should cancel their existing Netflix billing for one billing cycle before switching.

After any change, check both Netflix and Rogers. A Netflix subscription billed directly by Netflix may not appear on the Rogers bill, while a newly created Rogers-billed account may use a different email address from the family’s established Netflix account.
Practical remote and billing precautions
- Keep a voice remote out of unsupervised reach when the TV box can initiate account or purchase flows.
- Use a non-voice remote in a child’s room if your provider supports a compatible option.
- Do not use an obvious PIN such as a birthday or repeating digits.
- Keep the TV box in a common area for younger children.
- Explain that opening Netflix is different from being allowed to continue through account or payment prompts.
- Review recurring bill charges monthly instead of relying only on notification emails.
Do not assume that a Netflix Kids profile protects billing or account creation. It is a viewing restriction, not necessarily a subscription lock. Likewise, do not assume that disabling voice commands is available on every Rogers device; equipment and software options differ.
What this does—and does not—mean
The documented incident shows how a provider-integrated TV box, a voice remote, third-party billing and missing or ineffective purchase controls can combine into an unnoticed recurring charge. It does not establish the same behavior on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Samsung televisions or other platforms.
If you have Rogers equipment, the best first steps are free: review the bill, inspect MyRogers subscriptions, set both relevant PINs on every box, and verify whether the Purchase PIN actually covers third-party Netflix activation on your specific setup.
