Yes, the 97% figure is broadly accurate—but it describes one controlled blind test, not everyone’s ability to detect every AI-generated song. In a Deezer-commissioned Ipsos survey, 9,000 adults heard two fully AI-generated tracks and one human-made track. Ninety-seven percent failed to identify the music correctly under those conditions.
The result shows that convincing synthetic music can be difficult to recognize by ear. It does not show that AI music dominates listening, that people prefer it, or that human musicians are becoming irrelevant.
What the 97% study actually measured
Ipsos conducted the survey for Deezer from October 6 to 10, 2025. It included 9,000 adults aged 18 to 65 in the United States, Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Germany and Japan.

The finding means that 97% of participants could not complete that particular identification task correctly. It does not mean that 97% were fooled every time, that they would reach the same conclusion after repeated listening, or that AI music is indistinguishable in every genre, recording or listening environment.
Why the headline is easy to overread
Recognizing a song’s origin is different from judging whether it is enjoyable, original or meaningful. The test did not measure emotional impact, artistic quality, cultural importance, long-term popularity, willingness to pay, authorship or copyright status.
A listener in a short audio-only test also lacks clues that normally shape musical judgment: the artist’s identity, lyrics, cover art, credits, metadata, reputation and platform labels. Someone may identify AI because of a model-specific artifact, but that does not establish that all synthetic music sounds bad—or that convincing sound proves human authorship.
The result also concerns fully generated music. A human might write the melody and lyrics, perform the vocals and use AI only for cleanup or mastering. Another track might contain human-written lyrics but an AI-generated vocal. These are materially different cases:
- Fully AI-generated: the model generates most or all of the composition, lyrics, vocals, arrangement or performance, without a meaningful human performance or composition component.
- AI-assisted: a human writes, performs, edits or directs the work while using AI for ideation, arrangement or production tasks.
- AI-enhanced traditional recording: humans create the recording, then machine-learning tools assist with restoration, pitch correction, vocal cleanup, sound design or accompaniment.
The 97% result applies to the first category. Extending it to every song that uses AI would be inaccurate.

AI can dominate uploads without dominating listening
The most important corrective is the difference between supply and demand. Deezer reported that fully AI-generated tracks made up about 34% of its daily deliveries—roughly 50,000 tracks a day—in November 2025. Yet they represented only approximately 0.5% of streams at that time.
That gap widened in the platform’s later updates. Deezer reported roughly 44% of new daily uploads, or more than 75,000 tracks per day, in April 2026. In July, it said AI music had exceeded half of daily uploads while accounting for only 1–3% of total streams. These are Deezer-specific company figures, not a complete measurement of Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or the global industry.
Mass production makes upload numbers easy to inflate. A model can generate thousands of tracks quickly, including duplicates, low-effort releases and music created mainly to occupy catalog space. A large upload share therefore does not prove that listeners are choosing AI music in comparable numbers.
The more immediate problem: fraud and royalty manipulation
Deezer estimated that up to 70% of streams on fully AI-generated tracks were fraudulent in its November 2025 disclosure. In a later 2026 update, it reported that as many as 85% of streams on such tracks were detected as fraudulent. Those estimates reflect Deezer’s own detection and classification systems and should not automatically be generalized to other services.
The incentive is straightforward. If music can be generated and uploaded cheaply at enormous scale, bad actors can combine catalog flooding with artificial streams designed to capture royalties or manipulate popularity signals. That can distort recommendations, charts and the money available to legitimate artists.

This does not mean all AI-generated music is created for fraud. It means the platform’s more urgent challenge may be distinguishing genuine listening from industrialized manipulation—not proving that every listener can identify a synthetic vocal.

Listeners want transparency more than perfect ears
The survey found a mixture of curiosity and concern. Among music streaming users, 66% said they would listen to fully AI-generated music at least once out of curiosity. But 52% were uncomfortable that they could not distinguish it from human-made music, and 70% believed it threatened the livelihoods of current and future musicians, artists or composers.
Respondents also expressed practical preferences:

These results suggest that people may be willing to experiment with AI music while still rejecting invisible mixing, unclear provenance and competition on unequal terms. The policy implication is clear: listeners should not need to become forensic audio experts to know what they are hearing.
What Deezer says it is doing
Deezer says it began using AI-detection technology in early 2025 and became the first streaming service to explicitly tag AI-generated music in June 2025. It says its systems can identify fully AI-generated music from prominent models including Suno and Udio, exclude detected tracks from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists, and remove fraudulent streams from royalty calculations.
In June 2026, Deezer launched a free online AI music detector for playlists associated with 20 major streaming platforms. Deezer claimed approximately 99.8% accuracy and said its systems might miss about 0.2% of AI-generated tracks. It also reported labeling more than 13.4 million detected tracks in 2025.

Those are company claims, not independently audited industry-wide measurements. Detection can indicate that audio is likely fully synthetic, but it cannot by itself prove who wrote a song, what training material was used, whether a human contributed creatively, or whether the work is copyrightable. A label communicates provenance under a platform’s policy; it is not a universal legal certificate.

Deezer is both a platform affected by AI uploads and streaming fraud and a company promoting its own detection and labeling system. That does not invalidate the Ipsos survey, but it makes careful attribution essential.
The accurate wording is: “According to a Deezer-commissioned Ipsos survey…” or “Deezer reported…” The evidence does not justify presenting these findings as a neutral measurement of the entire music industry.
What the study cannot prove
- It does not show that people are fooled by every AI song or on every attempt.
- It does not establish performance by genre, age, musical training, headphones or repeated exposure.
- It does not compare newer and older generation models.
- It does not test independent AI-detection tools.
- It does not prove that AI music is artistically inferior or legally infringing.
- It does not show that listeners prefer anonymous AI catalog music.
- It does not show that AI music is replacing human artists.
The survey is also an online study commissioned by a company with a commercial interest in the subject. The number and selection of tracks can strongly affect how difficult the test is. Claims based on alternative scoring—such as analyzing individual song guesses rather than whether participants identified the full set—should not be treated as confirmed unless the underlying results are available and independently checked.
What this means for listeners, artists and platforms
Listeners should look for clear labels, recommendation disclosures and filtering options. A detector can be useful for investigating a playlist, but it should not be treated as definitive proof of authorship or ethical sourcing.

Artists should distinguish human-led production from fully generated releases when describing their work, and check the current commercial-use and rights terms of any generation service before releasing music commercially.
Platforms need reliable provenance labels, meaningful controls for recommendations and charts, and anti-fraud systems that protect royalty pools. They also need policies that distinguish fully synthetic tracks from legitimate AI-assisted production rather than treating every machine-learning tool as equivalent.
The central issue is not whether listeners can win a guessing game. It is whether the music ecosystem gives them enough information to make informed choices—and prevents automated catalogs and artificial streams from overwhelming discovery and compensation.

The 97% result is real within the limits of the Deezer/Ipsos blind test. It shows that fully AI-generated songs can imitate familiar musical patterns convincingly enough to challenge casual recognition. But it does not show that AI music has won the audience.
On Deezer, AI tracks have represented a huge share of new uploads while accounting for a much smaller share of streams, some of which the company says were fraudulent. For listeners and musicians, labeling, provenance, fair royalties and transparent recommendations matter more than perfect detection by ear.
