The reported injuries included facial lacerations and a fracture of the sixth cervical vertebra, known as the C6 vertebra. Positional asphyxia was listed as a factor. The reports also identified chronic alcohol use, liver cirrhosis and acute alcohol intoxication as contributing conditions.
Those findings are important because some early entertainment coverage gave a different explanation, describing Potthast as having died after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. That earlier account should not be stated as the final cause of death. The later medical-examiner reporting attributed his death to traumatic injuries from the bathtub fall, with alcohol-related conditions listed as contributing factors.
The available reporting supports an accidental-fall account. It does not establish additional conclusions about intent, foul play, the precise timing of the fall or the extent of Potthast’s intoxication beyond what was reported in the medical findings.

His screen presence was tied largely to the family’s reactions to Elizabeth’s relationship, including disagreements and discussions involving Andrei. Those conflicts belong to the shows’ televised storylines and should not be treated as independently verified judgments about the family or its members.
Andrei Castravet was Potthast’s son-in-law. The couple’s relationship made Elizabeth’s family—including her father—a recurring part of the broader 90 Day Fiancé cast and family network.
Elizabeth Castravet announces her father’s death
Elizabeth announced Potthast’s death on November 23, 2025, in a post shared with Andrei. Her message described the family as devastated and asked people to give them privacy while they grieved.
The family’s request is especially relevant when discussing the later medical details. Although the cause of death was subsequently reported through medical-examiner documents, unnecessary graphic descriptions and speculation do not add useful context to the story.
