Sheer gowns have long been part of Cannes red-carpet history. But the Festival’s current rules prohibit nudity, not every garment described as a “naked dress,” so it is not possible to say from the published wording that any specific archival look would automatically be barred. These nine memorable outfits show why the distinction matters.
What Cannes’ current dress code says
The Festival de Cannes FAQ says nudity is prohibited on the Red Carpet and in other Festival areas. It also bars voluminous outfits—particularly those with large trains—that impede guest traffic or make theater seating difficult. The 2026 Festival-Goer’s Charter sets eveningwear expectations for gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière: a long dress or tuxedo is suggested, alongside options such as a little black dress, cocktail dress, dark pantsuit, dressy top with black pants, elegant shoes or sandals with or without a heel, and a black or navy suit with bow tie. The charter repeats the prohibitions on nudity and obstructive voluminous outfits. It does not give a measurement or garment-by-garment test for either term. See the 2026 Festival-Goer’s Charter.
“Naked dress” is fashion shorthand for sheer or transparent clothing; it is not a formal category in the Festival’s rules. Vogue reported on May 13, 2025, that the wording had been updated shortly before that year’s Festival and that the boundary for sheer clothing remained a point of uncertainty. Stylist Rose Forde told Vogue, “Cannes has always been a stickler for the rules and enforcing etiquette with dressing, so I am not totally surprised.” Vogue’s report on the policy and sheer dressing.

Bella Hadid, 2024
Hadid wore a sheer Saint Laurent gown at Cannes in 2024. Its transparency is the feature that invites comparison with the current rule, but the published wording does not establish that this particular dress would be treated as nudity. Vogue identified the gown in its 2025 policy report and included the look in its gallery.

Jenner’s 2018 look appears in Vogue’s archival gallery of Cannes naked dresses. It is another example of the sheer red-carpet aesthetic that the current rules leave open to interpretation rather than categorically defining.

Ngoc Trinh, 2019
Trinh’s 2019 outfit is included in the same gallery. Its place in a retrospective about naked dressing reflects fashion coverage of the look, not an official finding that it violated Festival rules.

Diaz’s Cannes look is included in Vogue’s gallery, and W magazine describes it as a Versace naked dress. That description identifies its fashion lineage; it does not tell us how the Festival would assess it under today’s wording. W magazine’s Cannes naked-dress retrospective.

Hadid’s 2021 look is another entry in Vogue’s archive. The current published rule is about nudity, rather than a named category of sheer gowns, so a retrospective label alone cannot settle whether this outfit would be permitted now.

Hadid also appears in the gallery for 2016. The look belongs to the broader history of transparent red-carpet fashion at Cannes, where visual exposure and the official rule’s undefined threshold do not map neatly onto one another.

Campbell’s 2022 Cannes look features in Vogue’s selection. As with the other gowns here, the relevant question under present guidance would be how the Festival interprets the garment—not whether an editorial gallery calls it a naked dress.

Jenner’s 2016 look is also part of Vogue’s Cannes gallery. It illustrates how sheer dressing has appeared across different Festival years, even as the current rules do not provide a specific transparency threshold.

Kravitz’s 2015 look completes the gallery’s selection. Its historical association with Cannes naked dressing makes it a useful example of the fashion shorthand, not proof of a present-day dress-code violation.
Why “would break the rules” is not a settled verdict
The Festival’s published text clearly bars nudity and certain obstructive, voluminous outfits. It does not define nudity in terms of fabric opacity, specify how much skin may be visible, or name any of these nine gowns as prohibited. A sheer appearance could prompt scrutiny, but the cited rules do not support a definitive ruling on any individual archival dress.
There is also a separate practical rule for trains: even a formal gown can be disallowed if its volume obstructs circulation or seating. The issue is not simply whether a dress is sheer, but whether the Festival considers it compliant with its decency and access requirements.
Other Cannes-era looks require event context
Several other transparent gowns are often associated with Cannes fashion history, but the setting matters. Naomi Campbell’s sheer paneled gown was worn at the 2001 amfAR gala during Cannes week; that is not necessarily a Festival screening red carpet. Jane Birkin’s 1969 Emilio Pucci dress was worn at an event in Paris and has been linked by Elle to later Cannes-era fashion inspiration. Neither should be presented as a Cannes Festival red-carpet appearance without verifying the specific event and caption. Elle on the fashion-history connection.
