For a lively St. Patrick’s Day playlist, mix traditional folk songs and story ballads with Irish rock and pop. These nine picks span comic pub songs, fast-moving folk, and big sing-alongs; “Irish” here includes songs by Irish performers as well as music strongly associated with Ireland, not only songs of Irish origin.

The selection draws on Spotify’s March 2019 list of tracks most consistently streamed by Spotify users in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day over the preceding five years. It is a historical platform snapshot, not a definitive canon or a current popularity chart.

Nine songs for a St. Patrick’s Day playlist

  1. “Dirty Old Town” — The Pogues

A wistful folk standard that The Pogues turn into a rousing sing-along. Spotify ranked their 1985 recording first in its 2019 Ireland list. The song’s history crosses borders: English folk singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl wrote and recorded it in 1949, and The Dubliners famously covered it in 1968.

  2. “Seven Drunken Nights” — The Dubliners

This comic pub-song tale of a hapless drunk makes room for a rowdy, participatory moment. Spotify traces it to “Our Goodman,” a Scottish folk song dating to the 1700s, so it is better understood as part of a shared folk tradition than as exclusively Irish.

How to balance the playlist

Arrange the songs around the mood of the gathering rather than treating “Irish” as one sound. A few useful contrasts:

  • Big group singing: “Dirty Old Town” and “Where the Streets Have No Name.”

These categories describe useful listening moods, not strict boundaries. Irish song can include material composed or performed in Ireland and songs in either Irish or English; Queen’s University Belfast’s Irish Song Project reflects that breadth.

“St. Patrick’s Day” is also the name of a traditional tune

The holiday playlist is a different thing from the traditional melody called “St. Patrick’s Day.” The Irish Traditional Music Archive says Edward Bunting transcribed the tune from harper Patrick Quinn in 1792 and published a version in 1840; Bunting did not know its author or composition date. An earlier published version is known from Book XI of James Oswald’s The Caledonian Pocket Companion, printed in the late 1750s. The melody has been described as a 6/8 march, set-dance, or jig. As ITMA director Liam O’Connor puts it, “St. Patrick’s Day is sometimes referred to as a 6/8 march, a set-dance or even a jig.”

Explore beyond the playlist

If you want to sing or learn more songs, a songbook can provide lyrics and melodies together. ITMA’s account of Fr Pádruig Breathnach’s songbooks describes collections published from 1904 to 1926, with texts set to melodies in tonic solfa and source material drawn from oral, manuscript, and printed collections. The archive reports that Breathnach collected and edited more than 1,000 songs—around 470 in Irish and 530 in English. Those figures describe his historical collections, not the whole Irish song tradition.

For traditional music listening, Ireland’s St Patrick Activity Pack names violin or fiddle, tin whistle, and bodhrán among instruments used in Irish traditional music. None is required to enjoy the recordings above.
