The Pirates of the Caribbean films mix literal creatures with undead crews and supernatural antagonists. This spoiler-aware ranking weighs memorability, danger, visual distinction and impact on the story; it is an editorial list, not an official Disney ranking. “Monster” is used broadly, and the categories below distinguish creatures from supernatural beings and frightening human antagonists.
How the ranking works
The entries are ordered by their combined threat, visual impact and importance to the films. Where the available official descriptions establish only a character’s role or appearance, the entry stays within that evidence rather than inventing creature lore.
The nine most memorable monsters and supernatural threats
1. The Kraken — a destructive sea monster
The Kraken is the franchise’s clearest literal monster: a vast sea threat connected to Davy Jones and the danger facing Jack Sparrow. D23 identifies it as Jones’s destructive sea monster and connects it with the events that leave Jack in Davy Jones’s Locker. Disney’s Dead Man’s Chest synopsis likewise frames the film around monstrous sea creatures. Its scale and direct effect on the story make it the series’ defining creature.
2. Davy Jones — captain of the haunted Flying Dutchman
Jones is not a conventional animal-like monster; he is a supernatural antagonist whose unsettling appearance and command of the haunted Flying Dutchman make him one of the saga’s most memorable threats. Disney describes him as a supernatural force condemned to captain the ship. See the official Davy Jones character description. His place here reflects the combination of menace, visual identity and story importance—not a claim that Disney classifies him as a creature.

3. The Flying Dutchman crew — a haunted pirate company
The crew belongs in a monster list because the ship is presented as haunted and its captain is supernatural. The official character description supports that framing, but it does not establish that every crew member shares the same condition or origin. Their collective presence extends Jones’s threat beyond one antagonist and makes the Dutchman feel like a dangerous world unto itself.
4. Salazar and his ghost crew — released from the Devil’s Triangle
In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Salazar is a vengeful enemy released from the Devil’s Triangle, according to Disney Japan’s official film page. He and his crew fit the list as supernatural adversaries rather than as a biologically defined species. Their appeal is the basic horror of a pursuing ghostly pirate force; the cited summary does not establish additional creature mechanics.

5. The ghostly pirate skeletons — a recurring image
Ghostly pirate skeletons are among the franchise’s most recognizable supernatural images. Walt Disney Imagineering identifies them as a recurring theme in its Pirates of the Caribbean overview. This is a broad category, not a claim that every skeletal pirate in the films has the same backstory or curse. Their stark, instantly readable design earns them a place even though they are less a single named monster than a recurring form of threat.
6. The mermaids — dangerous figures of the sea
Mermaids are part of the Pirates universe, though the official D23 attraction entry that confirms their presence is not a full account of their film lore. The entry for Pirates of the Caribbean – Battle for the Sunken Treasure mentions mermaids alongside the Kraken. They rank below the central supernatural antagonists because that source confirms their franchise presence without supplying enough detail to support a broader claim about their nature or abilities.

7. Calypso — a sea goddess in human form
Calypso is best described as a supernatural being, not a conventional monster. D23’s At World’s End summary identifies her as a sea goddess imprisoned in human form. Her place on this list rests on the scale of that supernatural identity and her connection to the wider conflict, not on a claim that Disney officially labels her a monster.
8. Bootstrap Bill Turner — a frightening figure among the Dutchman’s crew
Bootstrap Bill appears in D23’s summary of Dead Man’s Chest, which places him among the film’s story elements alongside the Kraken and the cannibalistic islanders. He is a pirate character, not a separate monster species. He earns a place here as a disturbing figure associated with the Dutchman’s supernatural crew, while the source supports no further claims about a distinct creature type.

9. The cannibalistic islanders — human antagonists, not supernatural creatures
D23’s Dead Man’s Chest entry mentions cannibalistic islanders. They are included as frightening human antagonists, not as monsters in the literal or supernatural sense. That distinction matters: a menacing opponent can contribute to the films’ peril without being a creature, and the available summary does not justify adding unsupported details about their culture or behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where to start if you want the creature-heavy films
Dead Man’s Chest is the most direct starting point for the Kraken and the threat of Davy Jones; At World’s End continues the supernatural conflict and introduces Calypso’s place in it. For a physical rewatch option, Disney Japan lists a five-film Blu-ray collection on its Pirates film page. That listing establishes the set’s existence, not current stock or availability at any particular retailer.
