The Menendez Brothers revisits the murders and trials through the brothers’ retrospective audio interviews, trial footage and conversations with people connected to the case. Its most notable revelations are not all new evidence: some are the brothers’ accounts of their state of mind, while others clarify how the trials unfolded and what later appeared in a court filing. These seven points are an editorial guide, not an official Netflix ranking.
1. The brothers describe grief, not celebration, after the killings
In interviews featured in the documentary, Lyle and Erik Menendez reject the suggestion that they were enjoying themselves after killing their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in August 1989. Erik calls that idea “absurd,” and Lyle says “a part of Erik and I died on that night.” TIME reports that Erik described spending as an attempt to cover deep pain, while Lyle recalled grief and sleeplessness.
These are the brothers’ retrospective descriptions, not independent proof of their motives. The prosecution argued that they killed their parents for financial gain; the defense argued that the brothers acted in self-defense because of alleged abuse.
2. They say they were surprised the arrests took so long
The brothers were arrested about seven months after the killings. In the film, Erik reflects on that interval, the physical evidence and his mental state. The arrest timeline is a reported case fact; Erik’s explanation of what he thought at the time is his later recollection.

3. Their spending drew attention—and fed the prosecution’s financial theory
TIME identifies a Porsche, three Rolex watches and an expensive tennis coach among the brothers’ post-murder spending. The coach was reported to cost $50,000 per year. In the documentary, the brothers frame their spending as distraction from grief; prosecutors argued that the murders were driven by money, including an estate they said was worth roughly $14 million. That figure describes the prosecution’s reported theory, not a motive established by the spending itself.
4. The documentary revisits the abuse allegations central to the defense
Trial footage in the film shows each brother describing sexual abuse by their father. Those allegations were contested. They formed part of the defense’s account of why the brothers feared their parents and claimed they acted in self-defense, while prosecutors argued for a financial motive.

The trial record matters here: much of the defense evidence about alleged abuse was excluded at the retrial. The film’s inclusion of earlier testimony does not mean the same material was heard by both juries.
5. Erik says silence felt like protecting the family
Erik describes disclosure as feeling like killing his parents again, and the brothers speak of fear around revealing the alleged abuse. Their explanation offers context for why they say they stayed silent; it does not establish what every family member knew or believed.

6. The two trials had different outcomes and evidentiary contexts
The first proceeding did not end in an acquittal. According to the Associated Press timeline, the separate juries deadlocked in January 1994. At the retrial, a single jury heard the case, much of the abuse-related defense evidence was excluded, and the brothers were convicted in 1996.

The contrast helps explain why “the jury” is not a complete account of the case: the juries heard different versions of the evidence, and the first trial produced no verdict.

7. Later material cited in a filing adds context, but does not settle the allegations
A 2023 request cited two items: a letter Erik wrote to cousin Andy Cano before the killings, which was found later, and an affidavit from former Menudo member Roy Rosselló alleging that José Menendez abused him. TIME and the AP report these as material and an allegation cited in a filing—not as findings that a court had accepted as true.
The documentary’s director, Alejandro Hartmann, told Netflix Tudum that he wanted audiences to draw their own conclusions. He said, “I wanted to give audiences material to take their own conclusions,” and described the story as so complex that “at some point it doesn’t matter who is right or who is wrong.” Those remarks explain his stated approach; they do not resolve the disputed claims.

What the documentary adds—and what it retells
Netflix released The Menendez Brothers in 2024. Directed by Hartmann, it combines extensive audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, trial footage and conversations with lawyers, journalists, jurors, family members and other observers. Its distinctive contribution is the brothers’ retrospective narration alongside those other perspectives. The killings, contested abuse claims, financial-motive argument and trial outcomes were already part of the case record and public coverage; the film presents them again through its chosen interviews and footage.
