Season 3, Episode 9: tension gives way to a video game
In “Buck Asks Eddie to Go for the Title,” Stark remembers the kitchen exchange as deliberately tense, building toward the possibility that Buck and Eddie might fight. The smash cut to the two men playing video games with Christopher abruptly changes the mood. For Stark, that shift lets the show hold onto the intensity without taking itself too seriously for too long.
Season 4, Episode 4: Buck confronts his parents
Stark recalls Buck’s confrontation with his parents as emotional and cathartic. He connects Buck’s anger and his sense that he had “walked through fire” to the later revelation that Buck was conceived as a donor for his brother. Stark also remembered fellow actor Kenny Choi suggesting he sustain the intensity while his mother was covered, so her reactions would remain convincing.

Season 4, Episode 13: Eddie is shot
The scene’s physical timing presented a particular challenge for Stark, who had to carry Guzman and react to blood splattering on his face. The effect needed to surprise Buck even though Stark knew when it would happen. Guzman said he drew on a cousin’s account of serving in a war zone and tried to keep Eddie’s response calm and grounded, rather than heightening it.

Season 5, Episode 13: Buck finds Eddie in distress
In the episode, Eddie’s military trauma and the deaths of members of his former unit contribute to his distress; Buck arrives after Christopher calls for help. Guzman remembers crying through the filming day and feeling emotionally drained afterward, but also described the experience as cathartic.
Stark said Buck initially sees Eddie as someone he relies on, making it jarring to witness Eddie’s vulnerability. He described the acting problem as: “How do I approach this and how far do I dig?” That uncertainty matters to the scene: Buck has to offer support without treating Eddie’s distress as something he can simply solve by pushing for answers.

Stark remembers the oceanfront basketball scene as more choreographed than he had expected. Rather than a free-flowing game, the cast worked through planned movements together so the action could tell the story of Buck’s jealousy.

Stark says the argument grows out of the characters processing grief differently. He points to the handheld camerawork as part of what makes the confrontation feel raw. He also credits the cast’s trust with giving them room to try ideas.
Guzman recalls the director asking whether Eddie wanted to hit Buck, then exploring how the pushing might escalate. The account describes a scene built through both emotional conflict and physical choices, rather than a spontaneous fight between the actors.

The actors’ recollections reveal distinct approaches rather than a single formula for Buck and Eddie’s relationship. The Season 3 scene uses a sharp tonal turn; Eddie’s shooting depends on carefully timed physical effects; the Season 5 breakdown centers on Buck’s uncertainty about how to help; basketball uses choreographed action to communicate jealousy; and the Season 8 fight makes grief visible through performance and camera movement.
