The woman who follows Ruby is Ruby herself, decades older. The episode closes its loop when old Ruby prevents the Doctor from stepping into the fairy circle that began the haunting. Writer Russell T Davies described Ruby’s long ordeal as a life of penitence ending in a good act, but the story leaves the supernatural rules—and the woman’s words—unexplained.
“73 Yards” is the fourth episode of Doctor Who Season 1, written by Russell T Davies and first released on 25 May 2024. Directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, it moves from Welsh folk horror into a story about Ruby Sunday enduring a lifetime shaped by one unexplained encounter. (Official episode listing; episode guide)
Who is the woman in “73 Yards”?
She is Ruby Sunday at the end of her life. The episode confirms this in its final loop: after spending decades pursued by the distant figure, old Ruby reaches the original moment on the Welsh coast. She stops the Doctor from stepping into the fairy circle, preventing the event that stranded her in the first place. Once the younger Ruby is spared, the old figure disappears.
The reveal makes the haunting both a pursuit and a warning sent backward through Ruby’s life. It does not, however, explain exactly how old Ruby travels to that moment, why the figure must remain 73 yards away, or what rules govern the loop. Davies’s explanation offers a broad interpretation rather than a complete supernatural mechanism.

What happens in the ending?
The Doctor steps into a fairy circle on the Welsh coast and vanishes. Ruby is left alone with a woman who remains exactly 73 yards behind her. Whenever someone approaches the figure, they hear her speak and then reject Ruby, leaving her isolated. Ruby grows older, tries to live with the haunting, and eventually intervenes in the rise of politician Roger ap Gwilliam, known as Mad Jack.
In the final sequence, old Ruby returns to the circle and keeps the Doctor from disturbing it. That action closes the episode’s central loop: the woman who haunted Ruby was the older Ruby trying to protect her younger self. Davies described the arc as Ruby living a “life of penitence” that ends with a good act and brings the story “full circle,” as reported by Radio Times from Doctor Who: Unleashed.
Davies’s framing supports the idea of a supernatural correction after the Doctor’s disrespectful disturbance of something powerful. It does not settle every question about what the fairy circle is, why the Doctor disappears, or how Ruby’s life and the haunting fit together causally. Those details are left open rather than established as a rulebook.
What does the woman say?
The episode never reveals the words. It shows their effect: people who approach the woman turn against Ruby and leave her. Davies has said that the phrase will remain secret; Radio Times reported his answer as, “You will never know.” (Radio Times)
Rank #3
That refusal is part of the episode’s design, but it does not prove that every mystery has a single hidden answer. The audience sees the consequences without hearing the words or receiving a definitive account of their power.
Why is the distance 73 yards?
The number began as a practical visual choice, not a stated supernatural measurement with a disclosed symbolic meaning. Davies told Doctor Who: Unleashed that he went to Swansea Pier and used its railings to judge a distance at which a person could still appear as a figure in the distance. Radio Times reported his explanation. (Radio Times)
The distance gives the haunting a precise, unsettling boundary: the woman is visible, but never close enough for Ruby to reach her. Interpretations of that boundary may vary, but the production explanation is straightforward—the 73 yards came from measuring the sightline.
Who is Mad Jack, and what does Ruby do?
Mad Jack is Roger ap Gwilliam, a politician whose rise becomes a threat in Ruby’s later life. Ruby acts to stop him. The political plot shows that her life is not only a prolonged escape from the woman; she still makes choices that affect events beyond her private ordeal.

The Guardian’s recap describes Ruby as saving the world from a Welsh nuclear megalomaniac after a lifetime of running away from herself. That is a critic’s compact reading of the episode, not a line of dialogue or a complete explanation of the loop. (The Guardian)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the ending meant to be ambiguous?
The episode deliberately withholds key information, especially the woman’s words. Davies’s reported comments support a broad reading of the story as correction, penitence and a final good act; they do not confirm every proposed theory about the circle or time loop.
That openness divides critical responses. Den of Geek reads the episode through fear, mortality, resilience and hope, and argues against treating a single definitive explanation as the point. The Guardian, by contrast, found the supernatural mechanics insufficiently explained. These are critical interpretations, not competing canon answers. (Den of Geek; The Guardian)
Where to revisit the story
For a prose version, Scott Handcock’s Doctor Who: 73 Yards (Target Collection) novelisation is available as a paperback; the official Doctor Who page lists the paperback and audiobook release date as 8 August 2024, and Penguin Random House lists the paperback. (Doctor Who announcement; Penguin Random House) The novelisation is a way to revisit the episode in prose, not a promised definitive key to its unanswered supernatural questions.
