What is the plot of 28 Years Later?
Set almost three decades after the Rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, the film follows survivors living under quarantine in the UK. One community has settled on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When 12-year-old Spike leaves the island on a mission, he encounters dangers and discoveries among the infected and other survivors.

Are the creatures zombies?
Boyle describes them as infected, not undead. In TIME’s interview, he said: “We had this thing about, ‘No, they’re not zombies. They’re infected.’” He explained that they can die, distinguishing them from the undead, while remaining dangerous to anyone they catch. The film also introduces Alphas: stronger infected that hunt in packs, according to TIME.
