Rico Priem, a grip who worked on ABC’s 9-1-1, died from sudden cardiac dysfunction, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner records as reported by TV Insider and E! News. News headlines sometimes describe the finding as a heart attack, but the reports do not establish a more specific cardiac mechanism.
What was Rico Priem’s cause of death?
TV Insider and E! News reported that the medical examiner records identified sudden cardiac dysfunction as the cause of death. TV Insider also reported that the death was classified as natural, that there were no fatal traumatic injuries, and that toxicology tests were negative for alcohol and other drugs. E! News described cardiac arrest and reported cardiomegaly—an enlarged heart—in the left ventricle as a secondary finding. [TV Insider; E! News]

The reports also mention left ventricular hypertrophy, an enlargement or thickening of the heart’s left ventricle. “Sudden cardiac dysfunction” is the reported cause wording; describing it simply as a heart attack can imply a more specific mechanism than the coverage establishes.
How did the crash relate to his death?
Priem died on May 11, 2024, after a single-vehicle crash on the northbound 57 Freeway near Via Verde Drive in San Dimas. TVLine, citing the California Highway Patrol, reported that his vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons, went up an embankment and overturned. The medical findings later reported by TV Insider said there were no fatal traumatic injuries, so the crash circumstances should not be mistaken for a reported medical determination that crash injuries caused his death. What was known about Priem’s work shift?
TV Insider reported that Priem, 66, had worked a 14-hour overnight shift on the production in Pomona before the crash, which occurred as he was driving home. The reported shift and crash establish the circumstances described in coverage; they do not, by themselves, establish a medical cause beyond the examiner finding reported by the outlets.
