Spoilers for “9-1-1” Season 9, Episodes 14 and 15. Buck’s reassurance that he is starting to feel like himself again proves painfully incomplete: after a traumatic kidnapping, he is secretly taking pills to cope. The reveal turns a quiet final scene into a serious warning, and the next episode makes the danger harder to dismiss.
What Buck’s reveal actually shows
In the March 19, 2026 recap of Season 9, Episode 14, TVLine reports that Buck has returned from a traumatic kidnapping in New Mexico but is not talking openly about what happened. Eddie notices the change, catches Buck lying about going to therapy and urges him to speak with a professional. Buck resists.
Later, Buck invites Eddie and Christopher over and says he is beginning to feel like himself again. After they leave, the episode cuts to Buck pulling a backpack of pills from his closet, taking some and sitting alone in the dark. The scene does not identify the pills; TVLine’s March 26 recap of the next episode identifies them as opioids Buck has been using to self-medicate for physical and emotional pain. TVLine’s Episode 14 recap and Episode 15 recap provide the episode-by-episode account.
Why the quiet ending lands
The contrast is the point: Buck offers Eddie a hopeful version of his recovery, then the episode reveals what he has kept hidden. The pills are not introduced through a dramatic confrontation or an explanation; the audience sees Buck alone, after his friends have left. That restrained choice makes the gap between what Buck says and what he is doing the episode’s most unsettling moment.

It also reframes Eddie’s concern. He has recognized that Buck is struggling and tried to steer him toward help, but Buck’s denial leaves Eddie without the full picture. The reveal does not establish that Buck has accepted support or begun recovery. Instead, it shows how little his friends know about the risk he is carrying.
Episode 15 raises the stakes
The follow-up makes the danger explicit. TVLine reports that Buck experiences withdrawal and nearly takes fentanyl from the firehouse supply before admitting the near-theft to Chimney. Chimney offers help; Buck says he does not trust himself not to take something in the future.

That admission links Buck’s private struggle to both his safety and his work. TVLine reports that a disciplinary committee could affect his future with the 118, leaving his job uncertain in the episode’s account. It does not establish that Buck is fired, dies or completes recovery, so none of those outcomes should be treated as confirmed.
What “very worried” means—and what it doesn’t
There is solid reason to worry about Buck: the follow-up depicts opioid use, withdrawal and a near attempt to take fentanyl from the firehouse supply, while Buck himself doubts he can trust his future choices. Those are serious developments in the story, not proof of a particular ending.

Showrunner Tim Minear previewed “a real fallout” for Buck in comments reported by TVLine about the New Mexico detour. That phrase signals consequences, but it does not confirm what those consequences will be. The “crushing new reveal” wording is attributed to a Collider review by a later secondary article; the episode details are more concretely established in TVLine’s recaps. Undiscovered America TV’s article supplies that framing, not independent confirmation of Buck’s future.

The reveal works because it grows out of the episode’s central emotional contradiction: Buck wants the people closest to him to believe he is improving, yet he is coping alone in a way that puts him at risk. The next episode gives that closing image weight by showing the physical consequences, a near-miss at the firehouse and a candid conversation with Chimney.

That progression makes the storyline more than a suspenseful final beat. It puts Buck’s health, trust with his friends and place at the 118 under pressure at once. The episodes do not resolve those questions, and the recaps do not establish what happens later. For now, the most accurate reaction is concern—not certainty about Buck’s fate.
