In Season 5, Grace is away on missionary work aboard a Mercy Ship, while Judd stays in Austin with their daughter. Sierra McClain did not return for the fifth and final season, which ended in 2025. The hopeful update is about the ending the writers once planned for the couple—not a reunion that aired.
Did Judd and Grace split up?
The available Season 5 interviews describe Grace as away on a mission, not as having ended her marriage to Judd. Co-showrunner Rashad Raisani said she leaves after being moved by orphans at her local church and goes to work aboard a Mercy Ship. Judd remains in Austin with their young daughter.
That is a separation in the everyday sense that the characters are apart, but the interviews do not establish a divorce or breakup. The show’s explanation also allowed Grace to remain part of the story without killing her off-screen. Raisani said the production wanted to respect both McClain and the character, and hoped Grace might return if circumstances allowed. That hope was not a confirmation that McClain would be back. Is Sierra McClain returning to 9-1-1: Lone Star?
No. McClain did not return for Season 5. Jim Parrack, who plays Judd, said she chose not to return after contract negotiations failed, and spoke warmly of his former co-star. His comments support the reported production circumstances; they do not establish any further private reasons for her decision. TVLine, October 7, 2024

Season 5 was the series’ final season, and 9-1-1: Lone Star ended in 2025. So McClain did not return during the show’s final run; this is not an unresolved Season 6 question. Series chronology
What was the good news for Judd and Grace?
In December 2024, Raisani said the writers’ original plan, had McClain returned, was to give the couple a happy ending—probably with a second child. He described that as the ending they wanted for Judd and Grace. It was a plan for a version of the season that did not happen, not an on-screen outcome or a confirmed future reunion. How McClain’s absence changed Judd’s story
Raisani said McClain’s non-return led the writers to reconsider Judd’s arc without Grace. His drinking storyline was not part of the season’s original plan; it developed as the writers worked out how to follow Judd after Grace’s departure. The production chose to keep Grace’s absence open-ended in the story rather than resolve it with an off-screen death.
