That distinction matters because “on Netflix” is not a permanent or worldwide status. A film might have been licensed for one country, or for only part of a year, and later leave the service. Current entertainment lists are date-sensitive for the same reason; Vanity Fair’s Netflix movie guide, for example, identifies its recommendations as a selection available at the time of publication rather than a permanent catalog.
What counts as a romantic comedy?
For a reliable list, a film should have both a meaningful romantic relationship at the center of its story and comedy as a substantial part of its tone. A romance subplot alone is not enough. Romantic dramas, thrillers, tragedies, documentaries, and films whose humor is incidental belong elsewhere—or need a clear “romance-adjacent” label.

That boundary helps explain why a film such as May December should not be casually counted as a conventional rom-com. It has darkly comic elements and a relationship at its center, but its subject and tone differ sharply from a feel-good romantic comedy. Similarly, Isn’t It Romantic? is explicitly a romantic-comedy satire, but its 88-minute runtime is unrelated to the unverified count in this guide’s title. NDTV’s review describes it as an 88-minute film built around a protagonist caught in a stylized rom-com world.
How to use a Netflix list from 2023
- Check your country. Netflix catalogs differ by region, so a title reported in a U.S. list may not have been available in another country.
- Check the date. “Available during 2023” does not mean available all year, or still available today.
- Look for film versus series. A list of movies should not quietly include series.
- Distinguish originals from licensed films. Netflix may produce or distribute a title in one territory and license another title for a limited period.
- Use a current availability checker for tonight’s choice. Netflix’s catalog search is the direct place to check its current titles; a service such as JustWatch can help locate films across services, rentals, and digital stores. Availability still depends on country and date.
Netflix’s own Help Center is the appropriate source for current account and plan information. Prices and plan options can change and vary by market, so a historical movie list is not a sound basis for quoting a subscription price.

Choosing the right kind of rom-com
Once you have confirmed a film is available in your region, choose by mood rather than relying on an unexplained “best” ranking. A light comfort watch, a sharper romantic satire, a teen romance, a holiday story, an LGBTQ+ romance, and an international comedy may all meet different needs. For international titles, note the original language and check whether subtitles or dubbing suit your preference.
Quality is also subjective. A useful guide should explain whether a recommendation is an essential pick, a comfort watch, or a good match for a particular trope or mood. A critic score can add context, but it should not stand in for an explanation; rankings can depend on review counts and tie-breaking methods as well as the score itself, as TheWrap’s account of its Netflix Original ranking illustrates.

An accurate list of 88 would require a title-by-title audit: confirm that each entry is a feature film, fits the stated genre, belongs to the specified country’s Netflix catalog, and was available during the stated period. It would also need checks for duplicates, alternate titles, borderline dramas, and films that appeared only briefly. The research for this guide does not supply that audited roster, so filling out 88 entries from memory or from current catalog pages would not reliably answer what was on Netflix in 2023.
