Begin with an easy prompt, answer it yourself to model the tone, and let anyone pass without explaining. If a story takes off, follow it instead of rushing to the next number.
Brianne DeRosa of the Family Dinner Project writes that “Talking about thanks and giving can help your family tune in to the real meaning of the season.” The questions below balance humor, food, memories, traditions, gratitude, imagination, and group plans.
How to use the questions at the table
- Choose a prompt that fits the room: quick warm-ups for newcomers, playful hypotheticals when energy dips, and memory or gratitude questions when people are ready to share more.
- Keep answers optional. “Pass” is a complete answer, with no explanation required.
- Adults should play along with children. Keep imaginative prompts playful rather than turning them into corrections or hidden lessons.
- If a topic becomes tense, change direction gently to food, memories, or a silly hypothetical.

Write a few prompts on slips of paper, place them in a bowl, or let guests choose a category. Printable Thanksgiving question decks can make the activity easier to start, but conversation works just as well with one person reading from this list. Keep the pace relaxed: one genuine follow-up is usually better than several rapid-fire questions.
