For most people watching local movie files, VLC is the best free place to start. It can play embedded subtitle tracks, load a separate subtitle file such as an .srt, and search for subtitles on supported versions. If you use an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, Infuse is a polished alternative; Android viewers may prefer MX Player’s local loading and online-search options.
“Subtitle app” can mean two different things: a player that displays subtitles, or a database that supplies subtitle files. Most recommendations below are players or media centers, not subtitle databases. They are aimed at local files and personal media libraries—not at adding subtitles inside Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, or other DRM-protected streaming apps.

The apps are not interchangeable. VLC, MX Player, Infuse, and mpv are principally players; Kodi is a media-center platform; Plex and Jellyfin connect playback to a personal media library. OpenSubtitles, by contrast, is a subtitle service that some players can use. A player’s built-in search is only as reliable as its metadata match, provider access, and available language coverage.

1. VLC: best free subtitle player for most people
VLC is the most versatile starting point if you have movie files on a phone, computer, drive, or network share. VideoLAN documents Android support for embedded and external subtitles, multiple tracks, ASS and DVD subtitles, and subtitle downloading from the playback interface. Its Android app also supports network sources and Android TV and Chromebook use. Features and menus differ by platform, so do not assume the Android steps below match desktop or iOS exactly.

On Android, to add a subtitle: open the movie, tap Audio and Subtitles, then open Subtitles. For a file you already have, tap Options and choose Select subtitle file. Browse to the file and select it. To search instead, choose Download subtitles from Options and select a matching result.
VLC’s search can miss a subtitle if the video’s title or other metadata is incomplete or identified incorrectly. VideoLAN documents that limitation in its Android playback guide. If no results appear, try a clearer filename or load a subtitle file manually rather than assuming the language is unavailable. Subtitle search also relies on an external service, so results and access can change independently of VLC.
Choose it if: you want a free, open-source general-purpose player for local files and varied devices. VideoLAN presents its Android app as free, ad-free, and without in-app purchases. Skip it if: your priority is a polished media-library interface or a guaranteed online subtitle result.

MX Player is a practical choice for Android viewers who want local playback plus a route to search for subtitles from the player. Its support material documents both local subtitle loading and an Online Subtitles option. Exact labels and features can vary between app editions, Android versions, and regions, so treat menu names as version-sensitive.
Open a local movie, open the subtitle controls, and choose the option to open or select a subtitle file. Browse to your subtitle and load it. If you do not have one, look for Online Subtitles, choose a result, and check its timing against the movie. MX Player’s official support pages explain loading subtitles for locally downloaded videos and its subtitle features.
The trade-off is that MX Player is not an open-source, ad-free equivalent to VLC. Its support documentation covers ads and premium-related options, but current product names and availability may vary by market. Check the listing and terms in your own official app store. Choose it if you mainly watch local files on Android and like its workflow; skip it if you want a consistent cross-platform setup or a clean, ad-free experience.

3. Infuse: best fit for Apple devices
Infuse is designed for people who watch on Apple devices and want a well-organized library as well as subtitle controls. It is available for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision. The App Store listing describes broad subtitle-format support, including SRT, SSA/ASS, VTT, PGS, VOBSUB, and other formats, plus one-click downloads through OpenSubtitles. It can also connect to sources such as NAS storage, network shares, media servers, and supported cloud services; what is available depends on the service and app version.
To choose subtitles while watching, start playback. On iPhone, iPad, or Mac, tap the small gear button; on Apple TV, swipe down during playback. Open the Subtitles tab and select an embedded track, a local file, or a downloaded subtitle. See Firecore’s subtitle instructions for platform-specific details.
Infuse has a free version and a Pro upgrade; do not assume every feature requires Pro, or that a subscription guarantees subtitle availability. Its OpenSubtitles integration still depends on the provider’s coverage and access rules. Infuse also does not play DRM-protected movies and television shows purchased from iTunes, according to its App Store listing. Choose it if your devices and library are in Apple’s ecosystem; skip it if you need Android or Windows support, or want to play protected iTunes purchases in a third-party player.
4. Kodi: best for a configurable home theater
Kodi is a free, open-source media player and entertainment hub for people building a larger home-media setup. Officially supported platforms include Android, iOS, tvOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux. It makes more sense when you want a TV-oriented library and are willing to configure a media center than when you simply need to open one file and attach an .srt.
Kodi’s extensibility is both an advantage and a responsibility: use care when choosing add-ons and repositories, and do not treat every third-party add-on as an official Kodi feature. The official Kodi overview describes the project and platforms. Choose it if you want a customizable living-room media hub; skip it if you want a minimal player with the fewest setup steps.
5. Plex: best when subtitles are part of a managed library
Plex is a stronger fit for viewers who organize a personal media library and watch through a server and compatible clients than for someone who only needs a quick local subtitle load. Its subtitle experience depends on how the library is set up and on the particular server and client. Check the capabilities of the devices you actually use before choosing Plex specifically for subtitle handling.

Plex has a free base experience as well as optional paid features; the available features and terms can change. The official Plex site is the place to check current plan details. Choose it if you already want a managed media library and server-client playback; skip it if you do not want a server setup or your only need is opening one video and one subtitle file.
6. Jellyfin: best for users who want to self-host
Jellyfin is an open-source, self-hosted media-server ecosystem. It can suit privacy-conscious viewers who want to manage their own library and are comfortable maintaining a server. Subtitle handling takes place across the server and its clients, so the result can depend on the client, server configuration, and whether playback involves transcoding.
Self-hosted does not mean effortless: you are responsible for setup, storage, network access, and maintenance. Client quality and behavior can differ by platform. See the official Jellyfin site for the project and available clients. Choose it if you already self-host or want control over your media setup; skip it if you want a ready-to-use subtitle downloader without server administration.

7. mpv: best for advanced playback control
mpv is a free, open-source player suited to viewers who value playback control and subtitle rendering more than a beginner-friendly interface. It is a project rather than a single uniform app experience: desktop use and mobile builds can differ, so select an appropriate build from a reputable source. Its official project page is mpv.io.
Choose it if you are comfortable with a more technical player and want control; skip it if you want a guided online-subtitle search and a polished interface with little configuration.
8. Nova Video Player or BSPlayer: Android alternatives to check
Nova Video Player and BSPlayer are possible alternatives for Android users whose preferred interface or local-playback workflow is not a good fit in VLC or MX Player. Treat this as an alternatives slot, not a claim that the two apps have identical capabilities. Their current features, subtitle providers, update status, ads, and pricing should be checked in the official store listing for your device and region before you install either one.
Use an official app store or developer site, not a modified APK mirror. Choose one only after confirming that the current version supports the file and subtitle workflow you need.

How to pick the right app
- For a movie stored on a phone or computer: start with VLC; Android users can also try MX Player.
- For an Apple household: compare Infuse’s free features with the Pro features you actually need.
- For a TV-centered media library: consider Kodi if you want to configure a media center, or Plex/Jellyfin if you want a server-and-client library.
- For a personal server you control: Jellyfin is the open-source option, but allow for setup and maintenance.
- For technical playback control: consider mpv if you are comfortable choosing and configuring a build.
- For subtitles inside a commercial streaming app: use that service’s subtitle menu. These third-party players generally cannot add subtitle tracks to DRM-protected streams.
Before installing, check whether the app can load external files, which formats it handles, whether search is built in, whether an account is required by the provider, and whether the platform version has the controls you want. Search is not a promise: provider access, authentication, rate limits, metadata, and language coverage all affect what appears.
Loading subtitles and fixing common problems
Keep the subtitle file easy to match
For a local movie, put the video and its external subtitle in the same folder and use matching names when possible:
Movie.Name.2026.1080p.mkv
Movie.Name.2026.1080p.srtMatching filenames often help a player detect a subtitle automatically, but behavior varies. If it does not appear, use the player’s manual Select subtitle file or equivalent command.
Search returns nothing
Check the movie title and year in the filename or metadata, then try searching again. Subtitle services identify releases using metadata; an ambiguous name or incorrectly identified film can produce no results or the wrong ones. If you find a subtitle from a legitimate source, load it manually. Built-in search may also be unavailable because of provider access or service changes, not because the player cannot display subtitles.

Use the player’s subtitle delay or advance control for a simple offset. If the gap grows as the film plays, or the subtitle is consistently wrong after adjustment, the file may match a different frame rate, runtime, or edit. Find a subtitle for the exact version of the film rather than trying to correct a file made for another cut. Theatrical, extended, and director’s cuts may not share timing.

The wrong language or kind of subtitle appears
Check the track name and language before assuming the player has selected the right one. A forced or “foreign parts only” track covers selected dialogue; a full subtitle track covers all dialogue. Closed captions or SDH also identify sound effects, music, speaker changes, and other audio information, while ordinary subtitles generally focus on dialogue and translation.
The text is gibberish or does not render properly
Try another subtitle release, especially one saved in a UTF-8-compatible encoding, and check whether the app or device has a suitable font. Character encoding, font support, right-to-left text handling, and a damaged file can all cause display problems. Not every player offers an encoding selector, so do not expect one particular setting to be available everywhere.
A subtitle download asks for an account or fails
A player may search a third-party service rather than maintain its own subtitle catalog. The service can have its own sign-in, access, or download rules, and those rules can change. Confirm you are using the official player and provider flow; if it still fails, obtain a subtitle from a legitimate source and load it as a local file.
Privacy, cost, and legitimate use
VLC, Kodi, mpv, and Jellyfin are free and open-source projects. Infuse has a free tier and optional Pro upgrade; MX Player’s experience can include ads and premium-related options. Plex has a free base experience and optional paid features. Check current store and vendor terms in your region rather than relying on an old price or assuming that paid playback means better subtitle coverage.
Subtitle files come from different sources and can carry different licenses. Use legitimate copies of movies and subtitles, and follow the rules that apply where you live. Avoid unofficial APK mirrors and piracy-oriented movie or subtitle sources. A third-party player is not a way to bypass a streaming service’s DRM or alter its subtitle tracks.
For the clearest recommendation: choose VLC for a free, general-purpose player; MX Player for an Android-focused alternative; Infuse for Apple devices; Kodi for a configurable home theater; and Plex or Jellyfin when your real goal is a managed media library. Pick the tool that matches where the movie lives—not just the word “subtitles” in an app listing.
