7 Ways to Find New Music You’ll Like on Spotify

Use the right Spotify discovery tool for the job: Discover Weekly for unfamiliar tracks, Release Radar for new releases, Radio for similar music, and Search or Blend for fresh perspectives.

The best Spotify discovery tool depends on what you want to find. Use Discover Weekly for unfamiliar songs matched to your listening history, Release Radar for recent music from artists you follow, Radio for music related to one song or artist, and Search or curated playlists when you want to deliberately leave your usual listening habits.

Spotify’s recommendations vary by plan, country, device and account rollout, so some controls may not appear for every listener. The following methods work best when you combine algorithmic suggestions with deliberate exploration and recommendations from other people.

1. Check Discover Weekly every Monday

Discover Weekly is Spotify’s main personalized discovery playlist. It is refreshed every Monday with songs Spotify predicts may fit your taste, including unfamiliar artists, overlooked tracks and deeper cuts from styles you already play.

To find it, search Spotify for Discover Weekly or look in the playlists made for you.

How to improve Discover Weekly

  • Listen to promising songs for more than a few seconds, and let them finish when practical.
  • Save tracks you genuinely want to hear again.
  • Skip or hide songs that clearly miss.
  • Keep children’s music, shared-account listening and one-off experiments from dominating your listening history. Use private listening for temporary sessions that should not influence recommendations.
  • Do not save every acceptable song. Keep uncertain discoveries in a separate “maybe” playlist and reserve Liked Songs for real favorites.

These actions give Spotify more information about your taste, although Spotify does not publish a precise weighting for saves, skips, follows and listening time.

Spotify’s January 2026 description says Premium users may see controls at the top of Discover Weekly that allow them to select up to five genres and shape a fresh 30-track playlist. This is a Premium and availability-dependent feature, not a control every account will necessarily have.

2. Use Release Radar for new releases every Friday

Search for Release Radar to hear new releases Spotify thinks you may like. It refreshes every Friday and is designed for timely listening rather than catalog exploration.

That makes it different from Discover Weekly: Release Radar asks what relevant music has come out recently, while Discover Weekly asks what unfamiliar music might suit your established taste.

Spotify announced new Release Radar session controls on July 10, 2026. Where available, these can narrow a session toward options such as new artists, editors’ picks or particular genres. Spotify says the update is rolling out on mobile and desktop, so the controls may not yet be visible on every account. See the Spotify announcement for the rollout context.

Turn one release into a deeper discovery

  1. Check Release Radar early in the weekend.
  2. Save promising songs immediately.
  3. Open the artist profile when a track stands out.
  4. Listen to an album, older single or artist Radio.
  5. Add only the strongest discoveries to a separate playlist.

Following an artist helps you stay aware of future releases, but saving an artist does not automatically save all of that artist’s songs. Likewise, saving a song does not automatically save its artist or album. Spotify explains these Library distinctions in its support documentation.

3. Ask Spotify DJ for a specific vibe

Spotify DJ creates a personalized listening session and can change direction in response to text- or voice-based requests. Spotify’s January 2026 description gives examples such as upbeat workout music or songs resembling favorite tracks.

In the current mobile experience described by Spotify, start DJ from a dedicated button on the Home screen, often under Shortcuts. DJ is presented as a Premium feature on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page, and availability can vary by country, account, app version and rollout. Treat it as Premium-only unless your own app shows otherwise.

Use specific requests

  • “New indie pop from artists I don’t know.”
  • “Jazz with piano like my saved tracks.”
  • “Energetic songs released in the last two years.”
  • “Modern soul that is less mainstream than my usual music.”

DJ draws on listening history as well as current trends in music and culture, according to Spotify. That makes it convenient, but it can also reinforce familiar artists. If DJ keeps repeating the same names, request new artists or a specific period and save the best unfamiliar tracks. Then open Radio from one of those tracks for a less conversational, more focused exploration.

4. Start Radio from one song, album or artist

Spotify Radio is a generated collection based on an artist, album or song. It updates to stay fresh; it is not a fixed station and Spotify does not promise that it will eliminate repetition.

  1. Open the song, album or artist.
  2. Tap or click the three-dot menu.
  3. Select Go to Radio.

The exact wording may differ between Spotify’s current mobile and desktop apps. A Radio playlist can be saved to Your Library, and Premium users can download a saved Radio playlist. See Spotify’s Radio support page.

Choose the right starting point

  • Song Radio: Find tracks with a similar sound, mood or style.
  • Artist Radio: Explore related artists and less familiar names in the same musical neighborhood.
  • Album Radio: Continue a particular production style, atmosphere or era.

For more distinctive results, start with a less obvious song rather than an artist’s biggest hit. Radio is excellent at “more like this,” but it may stay close to the starting point. Starting another Radio session from a newly discovered artist or song can gradually widen the results.

5. Explore Spotify Mixes and daylist

Spotify Mixes are based on artists, genres and decades you already enjoy. They combine familiar songs with recommendations and change as you listen. They are useful when you want low-effort discovery that still feels comfortable.

daylist changes every day around your changing listening patterns and context. Check it at different times, because its value is partly that it reflects different moods and routines rather than presenting one permanent playlist.

  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences

A practical Mix or daylist routine

  1. Open a genre, artist or decade Mix, or check daylist.
  2. Notice the first unfamiliar track that genuinely catches your attention.
  3. Save it, or open its Song Radio.
  4. Use that track as the starting point for a second discovery session.

Mixes and daylist are better for extending existing taste than for radical exploration. If you play one narrow playlist constantly, they may become repetitive. Deliberately sample different genres, decades, languages and artists so Spotify receives a broader picture of what interests you.

6. Search for editorial, artist and user playlists

Search is not just for songs you already know. Try searches such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • new alternative
  • underground electronic
  • modern soul
  • Japanese city pop
  • acoustic live
  • women in jazz
  • new artists like [artist]
  • [genre] deep cuts
  • [city or country] indie
  • [year] best albums

Results can include editorial playlists, genre and mood collections, artist-made playlists, user-created playlists, friends’ playlists and playlists found through artist or friend profiles. Spotify also offers playlists made by music experts from around the world, as described in its playlist guide.

How to judge a playlist

  • Prefer a clear curator and a consistent theme.
  • Look for recent activity or updates.
  • Sample several tracks instead of judging it by its opener.
  • Check whether it is dominated by the same few major artists.
  • When an artist interests you, leave the playlist and explore that artist’s albums or Radio.

Human curation can break a recommendation loop because another person may connect artists and scenes that your listening history would never have produced. Playlist names, availability, order and personalization vary by geography and time, so two listeners may not see identical results.

7. Use Blend and Smart Shuffle for controlled randomness

Blend with someone whose taste differs from yours

Blend combines participants’ listening preferences into a shared playlist. Join or create one with a friend whose taste overlaps with yours but is not identical. Listen for tracks associated with that person’s preferences, ask why they like the best unfamiliar songs, and save discoveries to a “found through friends” playlist.

Blend is useful for serendipity but less precise than a personal playlist. If everyone involved likes exactly the same artists, it may favor overlap rather than new territory. Spotify presents Blend as a Premium discovery feature in its U.S. Premium materials, but feature availability can vary.

  1. Open a playlist or Liked Songs.
  2. Tap the Now Playing bar or open the playlist.
  3. Tap the shuffle icon until Smart Shuffle is active.
  4. Look for the recommendation indicator in the Now Playing bar.

Spotify says Smart Shuffle recommendations carry an Enhance badge next to the artist name. To disable the feature, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Include Smart Shuffle in play modes and switch it off. Spotify says Smart Shuffle may be active by default for free listeners on mobile, while Premium mobile users can control it. See Spotify’s shuffle support page.

Use Smart Shuffle when you want new suggestions woven into music you already selected. Use Autoplay when you want passive listening after an album, playlist or selection ends. On mobile or tablet, go to Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Autoplay. On desktop, go to Profile picture → Settings → Autoplay. Autoplay can be switched on or off; it offers less control than Radio or a curated playlist. Details are in Spotify’s Autoplay help page.

The best Spotify discovery routine

For a repeatable system, combine the tools instead of relying on one feed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Monday: Review Discover Weekly and save only genuine favorites.
  2. Friday: Check Release Radar for new releases.
  3. Any day: Choose one promising unfamiliar track.
  4. Start Song Radio from that track.
  5. Open the artist profile and sample an album or older release.
  6. Put the best results in a dedicated discovery playlist rather than immediately adding everything to Liked Songs.
  7. Once a week, use Search or a Blend with a musically different friend to leave your normal listening cluster.

Which Spotify discovery tool should you use?

Goal Best starting point
Find songs likely to fit your taste Discover Weekly

Find music similar to one exact song Song Radio
Explore an artist’s wider scene Artist Radio and the artist profile
Explore an unfamiliar genre Search and editorial playlists
Escape your own algorithm Blend with a different-tasting friend

Fix repetitive or inaccurate recommendations

Everything sounds the same

  • Start Radio from a less obvious song rather than a major hit.
  • Search for a genre with terms such as deep cuts, new, underground or a region.
  • Use Blend with someone whose taste is meaningfully different.
  • Listen to complete albums from newly discovered artists.
  • Stop relying on one familiar playlist; Spotify needs new listening signals.

Discover Weekly contains too many misses

  • Skip or hide poor recommendations.
  • Check whether someone else is using the account.
  • Use private listening for temporary experiments.
  • Save only music you truly like.
  • Give the next Monday refresh a chance before abandoning the feature.

Release Radar is too narrow

Follow more artists, explore the profiles of promising discoveries and use the new session controls if they are available. Supplement Release Radar with editorial new-release or genre playlists: Release Radar is intended to show releases Spotify predicts you will like, not every new release.

DJ keeps recycling familiar artists

Give it a more constrained request, such as a genre, period or instruction to focus on artists outside your usual top artists. Save unfamiliar tracks and start Radio from them. DJ is a guided entry point, not a replacement for deliberate browsing.

A menu or feature is missing

Spotify’s interface changes frequently. The paths above refer to the current mobile or desktop experiences described by Spotify, but labels may differ. Availability can vary by country, account, device and rollout. Update the app and check Spotify Support if a control is absent.

Do you need Spotify Premium for music discovery?

No. Discover Weekly, Release Radar, Search, Radio and several other discovery features can be used without buying a plan, although free-tier behavior varies by device and market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Premium is relevant when you want DJ, greater playback control, controllable Smart Shuffle, fewer interruptions or offline listening for saved Radio. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page listed Individual at $12.99 per month after a promotional introductory period in information checked on August 16, 2026; offers and eligibility change, so confirm the current terms at Spotify’s live Premium page. Premium may provide more control and convenience, but it does not guarantee better recommendations.
